NBC SN shutting down!

Comcast’s CMCSA, -0.92% NBCUniversal is shutting down sport cable channel NBCSN by the end of 2021. The move was first reported by Sports Business Journal.

NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua in an internal staff memo said, “at the conclusion of 2021, we have decided that the best strategic next step for our Sports Group and the entire Company is to wind down NBCSN completely.”
NBCUniversal will move much of its sports programming, which includes the National Hockey League, Nascar racing and English Premier League soccer, to USA Network.“USA has been a top five cable entertainment brand for over twenty years by way of constantly broadening our slate and finding ways to excite our viewers through immersive storytelling and iconic personalities,” NBCU entertainment network chairman Frances Berwick said in a statement. “We remain committed to original entertainment programming, and believe that high-profile live sports will complement USA’s broad premium scripted, unscripted and WWE slate, enabling us to engage our passionate, intersecting audiences more deeply and with greater urgency.”

Some of NBCSN’s programming will move to Peacock, NBC’s streaming platform, according to reports.

I'm luke warm about them TBH....like all NBC properties, they try their best to take sports content and make it unwatchable.

Well that sucks. That was my only way of watching the Tour and other bike races they cover. I hope that's moving to USA too. As for Peacock, heck if I can afford all these pay per channels nowadays.

I'm not surprised they did that, at least in my area (Orange County/Southern California). Just after the Rio Olympics it got put into a premium sports package that cost extra, so I got cut off and their advertisers lost my eyeballs. It was great when ti was part of the cable package, showing sports that I liked but were not too popular - rugby, bike racing (velodrome), track & field. I guess they're keeping it around until the end of 2021 for the Tokyo Olympics. Not sure how its content will fair on USA Network, as the only sports I know they show is NBA basketball and some MLB games (and the WWE, if you consider that to be a 'sport').

Peacock and all those other corporate-specific channels - no thanks, cost too much.

Well don't that just suck. Hopefully the Olympic channel will stick around after the Olympics this year and they will move the bike/run/skiing things I watch there.

Good. They inject too much politics into sports.

As long as services exist in the US that host Eurosport cycling feeds, losing NBCSN is no big deal.

Our dailyTDF coverage will consist only of the sprint finish, but potentially double in the mountains based on our estimation an attack has a chance.

Cycling and Supercross/Motorcrossare the two mainthings I watch on NBCSN. Some hockey... it will really suck if I can't get those two things without paying extra next year. It appears more and more things are moving to subscriptions streaming services...

How about shutting down laugh tracks while they're at it.

I’m with you for most American sports, but the two Chris’ in the studio are solid. Phil is Phil and Roll had difficult shoes to fill. The motorbike guy needs a re-think. But, I have listened to ES replays and have enjoyed them.

I read they are moving their events to USA. Not sure what they will keep. They are good for watching hockey, which has little presence on the major prime networks.

Is this bad news? I almost never watch other people play sports so I don't know.

I just hope cycling can find a place on NBC or find a nitche someplace else. I love listening to Bob Roll and Phil Liggett. I sure do miss Paul Sherwin, though.

When I first started watching cycling on TV, I watched on the OLN (Outdoor Life Network) which became Verses then NBCSN. I'm not a big fan of NBC, so I hope they can go someplace else.

NBC Sports Gold is my one sports splurge every year (since i generally don't pay to watch any sports).
I'm also a Phil Liggett, Bob Roll, Christian Vande and Chris Horner fan. Don't judge me.

just book marked tiz-cycling. Honestly I could never be bothered to pay to watch sports, it's just the cheap person in me. When it came to TDF I just watched highlights on youtube or watched through a Euro channel. Baseball I only ever watch some of the world series, I'd watch the All Star Game if I could remember when it is. Football if I turn on the TV and I like a team I might watch though I make time for the Superbowl. Hockey is nice in person. Soccer and basketball I've never considered worth the time. Cycling the races take long enough that if I can play it in the background then I will but otherwise the last 40 min is about the only part that interests me.
