Used Road Bike for $45, Came from Road Forum to Ask you guys

I posted the following on the road forum, but was told to post it here.

Is this bike worth $45 bucks. Cuz it fits me and I'm gonna buy it. Look at it and tell me what you think. I can't tell what brand it is. Can anyone help me with that?

https://homepage.mac.com/thedtrain89/PhotoAlbum2.html

So what's the verdict? Can you guys tell me what brand and model it is cuz I can't tell? Was it a decent bike back in the day.

It's a $45 dollar bike, I guess.

Looks like it says 'Apollo' on the downtube. Never heard of it, but it looks like a decent low-end Japanese or Taiwanese bike. Heck yeah, for $45 you can't hardly go wrong.

Stamped drops, stem shifters, saftey brake levers, why bother. I'd pass if it were $20, since you're asking.

Is it for you?

I would pass on it. You can find far better bikes at that price.

Let's not forget that the guy is in Boston... I'm sure that the market is inflated there. Offer him/her 15...

I'd love to tell you "Hey that's an Apollo, brazed by Sante Colliaghi, and is
a very well renoun italian builder"
but I'd be lying to ya.
Suicide brake levers, Suicide shifters on a stem that is dangerously high,
steel rims (looks like to me) and low level japanese components (looks like suntour).
For $45.00 you can probably do better. Persue some yard sales I've seen
nice Trek, Peugeot, motobecane and Bianchi go for that price.

Quite true. I found a nice older Raleigh Super Course at a garage sale that had new Conti tires on it for $20, which was the price of one tire.
Never heard of Apollo, but may be an off-brand 80's bike. I'd pass on it. Garage sales, yard sales, etc etc. You can do better for $45.

I traded a $5.00 Columbia for a Raleigh International last week, but neither example is an indicator of the used bike market where Dtrain lives.

Moreover, it looks like it has steel, cottered cranks, which means heavy. I purchased a Schwinn Voyageur for $60.00 a couple of months ago from your neck of the woods. So, I would hold out for a better deal.

Nah, it's a cotterless Sakae with stamped steel chainrings.

That looks like a cottered crank to me.

I've been wrong before but I'd put money on the cotter pin.

Even if cotterless, I'd pass or at least offer 20-25$ less. Bike does look pretty clean at least.

Thanks everyone, don't worry, I'm gonna wait on it and NOT buy the bike. I've been scouring Craig's list for a long time now.

Also thanks for the compliment on my taste. Macs are awesome. So good for editting movies too. I have an iMac G5 20 in. 250 GB, cost $1700 woooweeeee!Worth it though.

Problem is Boston is such a big market for bikes, I found 2 that were sweet, but they were sold before I even had a chance to visit the seller. I'll keep on looking though.

Pretty stupid movie of me (I'm in the little green car). Warning, it's about 4MB.

HI
I can't tell the brand but to me it looks like a very basic Taiwanese manufactured department store brand 10 speed bike. Worth $45 of course, as long as the wheels are straight, brakes and gears work.
Give it a tune up and away you go.

Hi TheDTrain,

Why does Boston have such a hot bike market?

Because the roads are crappy and tiny. And the drivers here are terrible. Also, the weather here sucks.
So if you put all those factors toghether, it makes up for a small amount of people that buy quality bikes.
In turn, the quality used bike market reflects the new bike sales.
