I'm waiting to see what the Force eTAP will look like.

There's reports now that for wide gearing with 1x axs road the eagle chain, Rd, and cassette is required instead of recommended.

The road axs stuff just can't be mixed with eagle.

Then there's the whole stupidity of the power meter attached to the chainring so when you have to replace the chainring you also have to replace the power meter because it's all one piece.

Re gearing: That makes sense. There's only one 12s Eagle cassette and it's 10-50, so yeah you're gonna need the correct RD for that.

Re power meter: There are plenty of ways around that.

Do we yet know how incompatible the 12-speed asymmetrical chain/gears are with anything else on the market?

Not saying that SRAM has done it...but it is quite possible they made a unique snowflake closed system where you don't have a choice but to use their crank

Everything is closed on road. The chain on road axs is completely different than your normal 12sp mtb chain. For optimal performance when you use 2x you are basically tied to the axs road chainring. 1x has more options because the mtb axs chain is the same as regular eagle.

The issue lies with XD vs XDR. XDR freehub is 1.8mm longer than XD. There were no changes needed to the mtb side of things with axs whereas road required a complete redesign. This is why SRAM is completely silent on 1x for road axs.

I'm just wondering if you could swap the chain/cranks and be fine...maybe. Possibly RD pulleys?...IIRC Di2 was fussy about RD pulleys, is/was etap?

The pulleys on the red axs rd are a new design so no aftermarket. Red axs is basically a walled garden that only works with itself. It's the main reason people are pissed plus the price. MTB axs is much more consumer friendly because all the mech parts work with it. AXS for road will be a non-starter for the masses until Force comes out but even then it will probably be marketed towards 1x more

Huh? Chainrings are offered in 40/46/48/50T?

The biggest cassette available for red axs is 10-33, hardly enough for 1x. The red axs chain is narrower than eagle axs. This means that the red axs chainring is narrower as well. So using the wider eagle chain might not be very optimal on a thinner chainring. I saw a video with the sram rep pushing 1x with 10-33 when he was talking about red axs.

It's a mess, there's no doubt about that. I really think things will come back to normal with Force eTap 1X come April.
