Hello
I have an old trek bike I’m trying to find the value for. I guess I have to make 10 posts in order to post pics. This is number 3. 7 more to go.

Your album,

Once you've gotten your 10 posts, you could ask about value in the Classic and Vintage Appraisal section and post the pics there.

Hi SHari,
Saw your photos thanks to Daverup above. Nice bike! Value will also depend on your location and the bike market in said location. It does look like it needs a rebuild so throw that into the equation too.

Check out vintage-trek @@.@@ com, they have a ton of details on old steel treks. It's a neat bike!
Agree that this bike would require a rebuild (overhauling the internals with new grease, replacing tires, brakes, cables, brake lever rubber)

1982 Trek 720
The color scheme might be a match for the the 1982 Trek 720 road bike (dark pewter/slate gray panels). They built roadbikes from '82 to '85 and 720 multittrack models from 1990 to 2000 but none of those colors would match anything on the four years they made the 720 road bike. Sometimes the manufacturers date code the cranks on the back of the crank. Too bad I tossed my old Sugino crank that had been sitting around forever. Can't check it for a date code.
Here is a site that allows you to date Trek bikes Trek Bike Models by Year and Color, If you go down a ways in the table you will find the various iterations of the 720. Some of the parts like the Huret derailleurs and that mechanical mileage meter on the front wheel show it is pretty old. That version of the "bike computer" tallied the number of turns of the front wheel so you had to convert that to miles traveled by the front wheel. I first saw bar end shifters by Sugino in the early 1970s. They were a great replacement for downtube shifters, much easier to reach.

Thanks for the info. I will take a look at that website. Any thoughts on the fact that it has Giro D’Italia etched in the handlebar area? I’m assuming that since it has that etching and also a name autographed on it, that it means it was used in that race for at least one year...? Would this have any affect on the value of it? Just curious.

Hi, also from Wisconsin! That looks to be an '82 or '83 720. It's in amazing condition. These are desirable bikes in the Trek collector community. You would probably have the best luck posting it for sale on one of the Vintage Trek Facebook groups. Given its original components and excellent condition I think you could get $500-$600 for it.

Hi Onehumanpower
Thanks for the suggestion to post it on a Facebook page for vintage treks - I hadn’t thought of that. Good idea.

Late to the party here, but I have a 1983 Trek 720 that looks very similar. These are indeed very collectible bikes these days, and I'll agree that $500 - $600 can easily be obtained if the bike is clean and in excellent condition. I was actually thinking that you could possibly get more if the right buyer came along. These were considered to be top-of-the-line touring bikes back in the '80s:
