Trek Dual Sport 1 , 2 , 3 , and 4
Hi. I’m new to the biking world. After doing some reasearch this seems like the perfect bike for me. I want a trek dual sport but I can’t seem to find the differences between the 4 besides price. I want to make my purchase tm and am perfectly capable of getting the dual sport 4 but is it really worth it? I plan on doing some paved trails but more off road trails. Please let me know any input. Thank you

Typically less expensive and best to avoid upgrades by buying the most you can afford up front. Then you won't be wishing for upgrades later.
Differences? Components, check Treks web site and it lists the components on each of the Trek DS's. The 4 appears to be Treks highest level of the DS. It's a nice bike!

At minimum get the 2. It has more powerful hydrologic brakes and a lockout on the suspension fork which you’ll want for smoother roads and trails.

I also recommend at least the DS 2. The DS 1 has a freewheel instead of a cassette, which is a cheaper and weaker design.

The Trek DS 4 is what I had my eye on for quite a while, Great bikes, the only reason I didn't buy is because the two dealers local to me were jerks.

Just looked again at the Trek DS on their site, noticed the frames look different. The 2019's are now out and they changed the frames on them. Those frames look similar to another bike I've seen....

It now looks like a Giant Roam. The suspension forks are now more in line with the frame, so the bike's lines are a little cleaner. Well in my opinion that is.

Thank you guys for all the input. I’m wondering if the ds4 is much better then the ds3 . I’m between those 2 right now. Plan on buying one of them this week

I too had a similar question to myself. Choose the more expensive option to get one extra gear with slightly different gearing style...with a slightly better suspension fork and a bit lighter or 2.5 lbs lighter. For $340, I personally don't think the upgrade is worth that money. If it was like $150 more, then I would say yes. But my vote is the DS3 as the best bang for buck. Save the additional money for the other items you will need to go biking with.
But this is really your decision. If you can afford the DS4 and think you will regret not getting it, then get it! It's nice.

I agree with Travis -- the DS 3 is probably the one to have. Apart from the nicer fork on the DS 4, you get less gear ratio range on the DS 4 (with only a 28/42 crankset), and a SRAM GXP bottom bracket (with has mixed reviews in terms of durability). The DS 4's brakes are a slightly higher spec than the DS 3's, but both are Shimano hydraulic discs that will perform very well. I'd probably look at the DS 3 myself.

I'm also in the market for a new hybrid bike and I'm looking more and more towards the Trek DS models. I'm undecided between the DS 3 and 4. I'm leaning towards the DS4 because you can lock the fork remotely. Also the upgraded components maybe worth the costs especially if you commute daily with the bike. I do 5000KM a year so for me it may be worth it. But it's a personal choice. My last bike was much cheaper but within 3 years I had changed a lot of components on the bike. After 10 years the bike has been totally rebuilt!

I Have a 2. If i can go back and do it again, I would either get the 2 again or maybe the 3. If you want to upgrade components, get the rockshox paragon gold rl. 2 pounds lighter than oem, only 250 but the ride quality is far different. Drivetrain, you can save weight also big time by going with a 1x set up like an slx drive train. 42-46 t chain ring depending on what you like, with an 11-40 11 speed cassette. Those 2 upgrades will bring the bike below 25 pounds and give it a different feel in the best way possible.
