Wheelset decision : need helps

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheelset decision : need helps

Hey all,

planning on buying a wheelset for racing and training. My budget is about 1,200 bucks.
My two current choices are the performance special Reynolds Rfour and the Mercury M5s.

Reynolds R Four Clincher Road Wheelset - Performance Exclusive

Mercury Wheels M5 Clincher Wheelset | Competitive Cyclist

I can't find much info on these wheels but wondering what one of the two would you expert speed fiends recommend?

Buy from the UK. Your $1200 will got much further. There are a *full* line of wheel sets available in the UK not commonly available here, i.e. Campy, Fulcrum.

For that price you can buy the Reynolds Assault SLG from UK.
Also nashbar every now and then "at least once a month" has a 20% off that usually applies to wheels. Yesterday the Assault SLG was going for $900 with the 25% discount.
Other options, to throw out there, is getting a chinese carbon wheelset from ebay. My friend bought one recently for $500 delivered, 50mm deep. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 38mm one for $400.

Thought about it but really don't want to deal with customs

I forgot about nashbar, I'll check their site. I read in a customer review that the Rfour were a older model the assault rebranded, but I haven't been able to authenticate that claim. I've thought about chinese carbon in the past but i've read stories about them blowing up or cracking from tire pressure. And also, there are so many dealers on ebay or alibaba I wouldn't know which ones to trust.

Have a look first. The campy stuff in particular is excellent and cheap.

Well I ended up buying the Mercury M5 clinchers from competitive cyclist. I've had them for a few weeks now and am happy with them, although I think I will be upgrading the hubs to tune hubs when the money comes in.
