aligning your spider?
Anyone know of a good technique to get your chainring aligned correctly on your spider to have an even chain tension when pedaling?

I agree as nice as it is to know that you have it perfectly centered, it is an aquired skill. I have changed over chainrings and used sheldons procedure and only ever ended up getting it right one time. I would just not run your chain that tight to the point that you can feel it binding.

I usually just stick the ring on and hand tighten the bolts and then tighten them down with a wrench like you would a wheel on a car. But I'm no expert and that's probably the wrong way to do it.

I did Sheldon's method (hand-tight, spin, wack, spin, wack, tighten in a star pattern) and it worked great on my Shimano 105 road double with a single ring. It's perfectly centered now. My IRO cranks couldn't really be adjusted as there's not enough space for the chainring to move around. Luckily it's already near-perfect on center. Also, cleaning and greasing your chainring bolts will make the process a whole lot less frustrating.
