Thank you. I am very pleased with both boys (a physics PhD working at General Atomics, and the DPT-in-training noted above), and I give my wife most of the credit in raising them. More importantly, the elder one has turned out to be a wonderful husband and father (of the fourth generation of two boys), and the younger one has a lovely and intelligent girlfriend we hope will become our second daughter-in-law.

Congrats! It's funny sometimes it's hard to tell what sticks as they are growing up. I was a bit surprised and quite pleased a few years ago when my oldest son asked if he could use the garage when he came home for a weekend visit shortly after graduating college. He showed up with new brake pads, rotors, brake fluid, oil, filter, and various other bits to give his car a full brake job and routine service.
I do a lot of DIY, but not so much on cars, just don't enjoy it. But as a true millennial he'd researched it all online and watched YouTube videos on how to do it!

I didn't have kids of my own, but I ended up being the primary male influence to my grandson who lived with us from ages 2-6, and again from 8 to 9.
A couple of years ago (when he was 21) he was quietly playing video games on the TV in the room we were all sitting in when his three-year-old daughter walked up to him with a book and asked if he would read it to her. Without saving his game, or any hesitation he shut off the TV, put down the TV controller and patted his lap for her to climb up.
I asked my step-daughter "what 21-year-old dad is so patient, devoted and unselfish with his time when it comes to his kid. She me in the eyes and said, "he gets that from you...that's how you were with him!"

This gave me a laugh as I realized that as a teenager I rebuilt the engine on a car I had received as a hand-me-down. Shortly after that, I sold the car and committed to not using a car any more than necessary.
When my son was in his early teens, we rebuilt the engine in a car his aunt had given us. Not long after that, we moved into town and he decided that he would never drive a motor vehicle.

Both boys drive a lot more than I do, but I average only about 100 miles per MONTH, because I commute to work on commuter rail, connecting at each end on foot. I probably walk, bike, and drive roughly equal distances per year.

My kids are 28 and 25, so I really like these stories. One of my kids will be visiting for 7 nights, with her sweetheart, next month. I haven't seen them since July of 2016, as they live in Colorado, so I'm excited.

Great to see the love and pride for our kids here. Both my boys did internships abroad (different years, different countries, different schools) and were in groups that shared a common vehicle. Both became the defacto drivers because no one else knew how to drive a stick. And while both are doing great by the standards set by society, I am more pleased about the men they have become.

I like the anecdote about no one else knowing how to drive stick, which is what both of my boys drive. I'll admit that I think my wife did more of the "teaching" in our house.......None of my 3 wonderful children have taken up cycling nor golf, two activities that are very special to me. They had plenty of opportunities but none caught the bug quite like I did. But thankfully they are all pretty active whether it's running marathons, Cross Fit, hiking etc. I'm thankful they have continued to incorporate some type of physical activity into their routines. I hope they have the inspiration and time to continue to do something.....life seems so hectic for these folks with newborns, work etc.

Henry is also learning why we always buy floor pumps with both Presta (bike) and Schrader (car) capability. (I have always found it easier to top up the car tires at home than to go to a gas station.) To stay on a cycling theme, note that this is a Nashbar pump I gave my son.
