Shimano Free wheel compatibilty advice needed
Hi,
I picked up a Nishiki Tri-a yesterday and it is in perfect shape with the exception that the freewheel was missing.
My question is do I need a special freewheel for SIS index shifting or will any freewheel work?
I would like to have it shift smoothly etc, and see a number on ebay right now that are inexpensive.
Will this one work SHIMANO MF-TZ20 6 Speed Index Freewheel
Will any Shimano freewheel work? Recommendations appreciated.
Thanks, Ben

Pretty much any current same cog count freewheel is likely to be SIS compatible. But any SIS compatible freewheel should also state that in the specs. Even if all the docs suggest things are good the proof in in the actual trying. BTW a new cog set might also want a new chain. Andy

Any Shimano SIS compatible 6 speed freewheel will work, including the one you cite.

Thanks for the reply...the one I listed in the post has that strange large black ring on it (why the difference?), in your estimation, will the freewheel allow for smooth shifting. I do not know what freewheel was on there originally, any ideas what it might have been if I want to find an original one?

Only caveat on "any" would be a TZ30, or similar, that has the largest cog of 34t. If your derailleur max cog rating is 28t, you could have problems. This is just a word to the wise if you want to replace the TZ20 someday with one that has lower gearing.

The black is just marketing/advertising. You're not going to have much choice for equipment that dated, unfortunately. I tried a quick search for Hyperglide 6 speed freewheels (which would shift better) but only found an off-brand - https://www.google.com/search?q=sunl...17143638901023

The color difference is just marketing; calling attention to the extra-low gear the cog provides.

Don't know where you're sourcing your parts, but if you're looking for used, before hyperglide there were twisted tooth SIS 6 speed freewheels.
either will work, but the hyperglide freewheel will shift much better.
John D. posted a picture of a hyperglide freewheel above. Notice the ramps cut into the side of the cogs? The original SIS freewheels didn't have this feature.

Hilarious! I'm sitting in my garage this minute waiting on a local buyer fondling two twist tooth Shimano freewheels in six speed wondering what to do with them.
