Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

This MASH nonsense

Moved to SF a year ago. Been Riding track bikes for 12+ years. I'm friends with dudes in multiple bike "clubs" back home that have been around for 20+ years. They don't brand/sell products with their crew name on them. Why is it that these MASH idiots feel the need to commercialize fixed gear riding? Making a profit off of silly videos/clothes/components. I mean, is that what fixed gear riding has come to? MASH stickers on AEROSPOKES, green hubs with the MASH logo, and MASH logo bar ends. Its all silly and rather childish. Lets make an attempt to keep fixed gear riding low key and fun and not another commercial money making machine. Unless of course you live in a fly-over state, and feel the need to be a part of something.

It's too late... I'm trying to get into the fixed gear game... And when I try to get into something, it's the opposite of low key...

It's high key baby!

I'm from SF too. How you liking it so far?

This "commercializing" is interesting to see where it will head. Being in SF it feels like being in the center of a new old sport. these kids have roots in skating and its easy to see why this is happening from that perspective. Though it would be sweet to make money from just riding.

exactly, if you don't like it don't buy it. But i have a feeling neither mike or gabe are making a lot of money off this. Independent video productions are expensive.

I liked it, I like seeing guys doing crazy stuff on their bikes and clearly loving it - they were having fun *shrug* - they made a DVD out of it, I had no bothers ponying up a few bucks (that would've been smoke/drank away anyway). Just like the nutso downhillers - it's stuff I don't necessarily see myself doing, but it's cool to watch IMO.

If you don't like it, don't bother with it - if you were that uninterested, pretty sure you wouldn't have asked for the torrent link for it.

Illspecialist was the OP, extremeenergy3 requested the link.

OP I hear what you're saying... the video was fun but it was mostly the music; people will commodify everything and anything these days (and with the expense of making the video vs. the amount they get back via that route... I'd imagine all the merchandise offsets their costs quite a bit). Every one else is getting in on the fixed gear fad, MASH might as well do it too? Dog forbid they just ride their bikes and have fun, it's hard keeping yourself supplied with arrospokes and NJS frames.

i'd be willing to bet it's more about the cred + "presumed" profit than actual money. that's what stuff like this is about 90% of the time...
