Commuting by bike
Not the river again... This is at the top of the hill, before the fast descent down to the waterfront.
After work, this is where I claim my reward for climbing the steep Stryker Hill.
Here's a beauty shot of my Specialized Sequoia commuter; It's a 650b conversion that turned out a treat.
Life is so much better when you can ride to work.

Sunset ride out to the velodrome. It's getting chilly fast around here once the sun goes behind the hills...

Isn't there an unwritten rule about non-drive side silhouettes?

Yesterday my wife and I rode our off-topic tandem in the Sonoma wine country. A beautiful day that started cool and warmed up nicely.
Our route took us on little secondary roads through an area of small working vineyards, some with modest tasting rooms, avoiding the more popular tourist routes with their esatz Tuscan tasting palaces and crowds of rented convertible Mustangs.
Deli sandwiches on the shaded front porch of the general-store-turned-deli provided a nice break from the 80-degree heat of the mid-day.
The harvest has begun and the grapes are fat. Each vineyard waits to pick until the sugar content of their grapes has reached the right level for their particular purposes. Terrain, variety of grape, and age of vines are among the factors that influence when a particular vineyard is just right to pick, so the harvest goes on for a few weeks at this time of year.

I see a bunch of nice grapes. I just rode my commute again. Been riding the Peugeot PF10 (nee PFN10). Really liking it. Broke a toe strap though today.

About 40+ miles to Issaquah and back. Ran into Bob Freeman's wife Deanna and her friend Debbie purely by chance on the trail while passing through Redmond. Small world
This pic was taken about a mile from my place in Bothell. I did some editing to make the colors pop a little:

New handlebar tape makes you faster and knowing a water fountain is at the end of the ride helps you to keep going. Great 80° weather this afternoon. Broke my end-plugs getting them out, but they somehow stayed in for the ride; I don't need to crash and have a core-sample taken of my spleen. (Did anyone ever hear of that actually happening from an un-plugged bar?)

Do you go out on the ride with the deliberate purpose of photographing your ride? Are these photos incidental to your ride?
I never stop riding on my rides, so I never have photos.
I have spent my whole life in the saddle but have no photos to share.

The process of looking for interesting photo opportunities has encouraged me to look around and enjoy the scenery more. It has also slowed me down. So now days I have my hammer rides and my photo rides: Both enjoyable in their own way.

I never stopped for photos on my rides until I started following this thread! I so much enjoy the photos that others post of their own sections of the bicycled world that I decided it behooved me to do my part.

Tooled 56 miles up into Lake County. Starting to see some fall color.
NU is having a football game today, so I needed an alternative route across the North Branch of the Chicago River. In past years, I had avoided this bridge because of its metal grate bed. Much to my surprise, they laid down a concrete bike (and golfcart) lane. Smooth sailing...
At the furthest point from home, it started to rain (as my wife predicted). Thankfully, I had just gotten to Lincolnshire North park and was able to wait out the rain in the fancy picnic shelter (air-conditioned bathrooms!)
Things dried out pretty well by the time I got back to civilization. Had to wait for the CTA purple line near the Linden station, which is the northern terminus of the line. The EL trains run at grade up north.

I met up with a fellow BF friend in Midtown on Thurs. morning for a bit then headed home to take the little ones out to the park to practice on their respective bike and scooter. A nice 40 mile day of NYC streets.

Yesterday I had a lovely ride w/ a bunch of friends in beautiful southeastern Massachusetts:
We rode out of Westport and noodled around the various peninsulas that poke into Narragansett Bay.

Mrs non-fixie and I took advantage of what might be the last real summer day here in Holland to test a couple of bikes for our trip to Italy next week. She rode her new-to-her Méral and I had brought my Vittorio Strada.
Lunch in Baarn (and no, we didn't have the Burger Madness):

37 miles today out thru the Somis (CA) foothills. We stopped at an avacado ranch previously owned by a bike club member. He put a water fountain near the road for us, and the new owners are keeping it going for us. Nice people. The light was nice, so here's a couple shots of my '78 PR10.
Buzz's ranch, still a welcome water stop.
Couldn't decide which angle to post .

Glad to hear that you stayed dry on Saturday, @thinktubes
Saturday I rode a 200km brevet out of Evanston, and got rained on for what felt like about 3 hours between miles 50 and 100.
The majority of the ride I was with 4 other riders, with only myself and one other running fenders. I think I got more wet from their tire spray than from the rain itself!
Not really, though, we got absolutely dumped on. But I was super glad to have fenders on my big Trek. Got lots of compliments on it, too The one thing I neglected was to put some mudflaps on, so yesterday I made some and installed them. I figure that's a great way to never get caught in the rain again, if I'm prepared then the rain should stay away!
A couple of pictures from one of our riding group, not sure if Frank is on here or not. The first picture is why I spent a few hours yesterday cleaning my bike I'm in the white jersey in the second picture.

Not meaning to derail the thread, but I'm kind of curious about cycling in Holland. Here in the US most of the praise for Dutch bike infrastructure we read about are the separated cycle paths within the larger cities, especially Amsterdam. Does that approach extend to smaller towns and rural routes? Bringing up Google Maps and enabling the cycling overlay suggests that's the case. If so, must be nice not to have to mix it up with the cars and trucks.
