https://www.cbsnews.com/news/shimano...o%20the%20CPSC.
The recall covers roughly 680,000 cranksets that were sold in the U.S. from January 2012 to August 2023 for between $270 and $1,500, according to the CPSC.
https://escapecollective.com/shimano...illion-so-far/
Shimano’s massive recall of several series of its 11-speed Ultegra and Dura-Ace crankarms cost it $18 million in the second half of last year, the company revealed in its 2023 annual report. [PDF]
The bad news, of course, is that the long-delayed recall cost US $18.3 million.

There were countless articles written about this issue between probably 2019 and 2023. Forums filled with discussion, media articles about the issue and Shimano's denial, and an infamous instagram page dedicated to it too.

How about a 50th anniversary heritage set with a re-manufacture of one of their better old systems with some extra bling and more modern materials? I know it would only appeal to old duffers with more money than sense to put on their high end vintage display frames but it would generate publicity and perhaps some income.

I think it's understood, but just to clarify--2023 would have been Dura Ace's 50th Anniversary, not Shimano, which is much older (founded 1921--so that anniversary was missed as tool).

Shimano makes good stuff. Not enough people care about 50th anniversary jewelry. It would be a money loser.

I think it would depend on the quality, finish and looks. The 25th Anniversary group's initial sales were modest, but they sold out of them eventually--between 3,000 and 5,000 sets. Probably made some money on them. Those sets sell for around $4,000 bucks or more nowadays.

But as others have mentioned, today's Dura Ace isn't 1998's. Besides, they're a year late. No one wants "50th anniversary" parts issued a year after the anniversary. Better wait another 24 years and see what they can come up with on the 75th anniversary. But if trends continue, I don't see them producing anything that could remotely be considered "eye candy" the same way the 25th anniversary group was. I guess those days are long gone.

I guess it's just me. I perform fit and function over appearance. And realistically would prefer black components over shiny bits considering how dirty things get.

It’s not just you. It’s the market in general. If everyone still preferred shiny bits then that’s what they would be producing.

To me, appearance is part and parcel of fit and function. A higher-quality finish is an indicator of precision to me.

And I would think black would show dirt far more readily than silver (which is why my grandfather always opted for silver cars--could go for longer periods between washings).

In this case it is just aesthetics. But you can pretend what you like to suit your own preferences. Nobody cares.

One of the reasons you don't see shiny bits on lots of things anymore is because of environmental concerns. The shiny chrome process is not friendly to the environment.

It's not the dirt I'm referring to. It's the oil from the chain and whatever black crap kicks up off the road. I happen to have a white bike. After every ride I have black splotches all over the bike...mainly downtube and chainstays...that I need to clean off. Bought the bike during covid times, so getting to choose colors was not an option with thin inventory.

As for the imaginary 50th group, would that group be a plug and play with most any bike of the time era? Or, would you have to buy more parts to make it work?

It still is...Mainly the shapes of frame tubes or a cleaner look (hidden cables etc.). Shiny jewelry bits are not part of that equation.

If they had done it, perhaps a 50th Anniversary "group" could have been produced with a number of options, so that older bikes as well as newer ones could be used. Offer a seatpost, stem and hubs for older bikes; modern cranks and electronic shifters for newer bikes, but make all the parts share a common design aesthetic, common logos, etc.

What I'm talking about is mostly the crank/BB/headset type stuff. BITD with that 25th edition, you probably ordered either a 68 or a 70 depending, and you were good to go. Now days, there seems to be a lot of "standards." Not a lot of crossover ability.

You are guessing. You don't know that. Nobody knows why Shimano didn't release a 50th anniversary Dura Ace. All we are saying is that it's a missed opportunity for the company.
