I'm probably the only person who is bothered by it, but I think the "How was the commute today?" thread is way too big.

It is over 3 years old, sprawling over 400 pages and has just broken the 10,000 post mark.
I realize these stats are impressive, but I think this thread needs to be retired.

p.s.
big props to Gus Riley for starting such a great thread...

I don't care but why change it? It seems silly to be bothered by a long thread.

I hate sticky threads. Part of it is conceptual -- the notion that certain topics are exempt from the general principal that interest in the thread keeps it at the top of the list irks me. But mostly, it's practical. When a topic has archival value -- such as the geek light thread -- one big thread is much less useful than a series of threads which are more focused. It takes forever to load, the search capabilities are primitive, and it's not really one thread anyway so it's hard to follow. When a thread does not have archival value -- like the HWTCT thread -- the problem is even worse. Who cares about how your commute was three years ago?

My preference would be a thread like the "long-distance commute club" threads -- a new one every week, clearly titled so you can ignore it if you're not interested, that rises and falls on its own merits. Just my 0.02.

I haven't even looked in that thread in months. I assume most everyone had a close-to-average commute today. If it was especially good/bad/scary/hard/weird/etc., then it probably deserves it's own thread.

It's like seeing how far you can drive when the gas gauge goes to the left of "E". You just wanna keep pushing it. At least I do. Let it grow.

no way. you've gotta keep it! it's indestructible! While it might be a nuissance to some, how hard can it be to just scroll past it? Some of us really enjoy posting daily.. even if it's just about how the ride went, what we saw, etc. ...and it's fun to see how big it can get

If you really want to unsticky it... ok (would be annoying to have to look for it), but don't kill it completely.

I don't care where you put it. When I want to know if it is still cold in Canada in January or if the sun still rises in the East in Colorado I will seek out the HWTCT thread wherever it is located.

HWTCT... I like that. Its own acronym! Cool. Let it grow, but I’m slightly biased.

Hmmmmmm...

Usually when a thread gets this big, we will split the thread up and just take the last 3 pages and the last three pages will be the start of the thread, while the other pages are allowed to be reasorbed back into the forums, and if people want, they can still access the other thread as much as possible (though it will be locked).

I may just do that. I'll wait to see what you all think.

It wouldn't have the same appeal if it was chopped up or started again, 10,000 posts and nearly 200,000 views ? Come on ! As a subject it's perfect for a long thread............

Keep it !!

If we cut the thread down, the new thread would still show as 10,000 posts and nearly 200,000 views. It just would be easier to manage, that's all.

i suppose i don't care either about the length; i just go straight to the last page anyway to catch up on how the day went for everyone else. but i like it being a sticky. it's a check-in thread about what we all have in common in this area, and i do like reading about everyone else's day. so to me having it up there right at the top makes it like a banner of what this particular forum's about. i'd be sad if i had to go hunting for it among the darwin ethic of the other threads, but i'd probably live anyway.

I aways go to my profile page and click on my last post, which is almost always HWTCT, and then just read from there.
I guess what I'm getting at is I don't really care where it is...even though I kinda think it should be left alone.

I wanna keep it as it is. Threads like those keep bike forums distinct from the others. Plus those stories usually make my day...

I want there to remain a how-was-the-commute-today sticky. Chop the thread in two or don't, I dont care that much.

I like it because it takes allows people to make pretty mundane everyday posts... and sets them all in their own special place so that if we want to ignore them it's really easy.

i think it ought to be a ring-buffer thread where the last 100 posts are kept but each new one causes the oldest to drop off. don't know if this bb software supports it, but as they say its just a SMOP (small/simple matter of programming)

Well, Gus has spoken, and it also seems like my opinion is in the minority...

Long live "How Was The Commute Today", the 'King Of All Threads' !!

Thanks for participating in the poll and sharing your feelings about the thread...

You don't have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing...

Just check HWYCT and you will get a report from around the world.

Why even worry about that thread? Does it cause any problems?
