Frames and Framebuilding (1970-1979) Unconventional Frame Materials

One article from Popular Mechanics and two articles from Bicycling! look at titanium, stainless steel, carbon fiber, plastic, and aluminum as frame materials.
Not rich with technological information, but collectively more of a nostalgic glimpse of mid-1970s exploration of materials other than chromoly steel.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing these!

Did that plastic bike ever reach the market? Anyone have one?

I haven't seen one in the wild, but I know I've seen that same photo of bike and model in color in which the bike was a bright red. Just can't remember where right now.
The new MOMBAT site has text that came from the bike company's marketing literature (https://mombatbicycles.com/MOMBAT/Mus...e_History.html).
The site also has a photo showing the bike was available in 6 colors and some parts in color.
It seems there's more to this story. Would love to hear it.

Only a couple prototypes were made. When I was in college in Albany I used to ride my bike to a coin shop on Central Ave and they'd let me bring it in to keep it safe. The guy who ran it had created the plastic bicycle and had made a few but something fell through on it and they never materialized. He had advertising materials and everything. Was being done through RPI if I remember correctly.

Thank you. Absolutely wonderful. "Engineered structural resin": a whole bike made of Delrin. The bars look kinda funky, but the rest of the bike just looks about thirty years ahead of its time.

Thanks for chiming in. I'm hoping for more, especially pictures.
