Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bicyclists ticketed $195 each for ignoring Stop Signs

https://raccoonrivervalleytrail.org/blog/2015/09/02/ouch!-bicyclists-ticketed-$195-each-for-ignoring-rrvt-stop-signs!/

I ride this MUP all the time. a lot of the intersections have yield signs, but there are a few stop signs.

$195 seems pretty stiff, I think they were trying to make a point before a big weekend

somewhat steep but I am sure you would be seeing that if you ran a stop sign in a car so I can see it both ways. I am surprised no warning or anything

End of the month too. Revenue generating time, perhaps?

I can't remember the city, but a group of cyclists decided to stop at every sign and showed how much traffic backed up. It's a touchy subject because the law says stop.

It looks as if a DNR officer got carried away with his personal biased outrage and decided to teach a lesson with letter-of-the-law enforcement. He'll probably get told to knock it off and go back to checking fishing licenses.

The officer may well have saved the bicyclist from having a collision with a motorist.

I think it was recently in San Fran.

I really wish we had the "Idaho rule" here in Philly. It would help a lot since many parts of the city have narrow streets. Then again, most cyclists don't stop for stop signs anyway so in practice one part of the rule does exist. The problem is that many of them don't yield to cars and pedestrians like the Idaho rule requires.

Doubtful, relaxed stop requirements have shown to reduce collisions.

Have anything to back that statement up? Because it's sounds so ridiculous I had to google it, and found absolutely the opposite.

I have no problem with obeying traffic signs on my bike and getting a ticket if I don't, but I also would expect every motorist who passes a bike without allowing adequate space, or moves through an intersection when it's supposed to be the bike's turn to also get ticketed.

He may well have saved him from being abducted by aliens and probed. We'll just never know. But don't let that stop anyone from speculating.

Good to know that there is a cop out there who wants to ticket you for doing a rolling stop. I ride that area. I suspect I do what most cyclists do which is to slow down and look but keep going if there is no oncoming traffic. The DNR officer sounds like an officious jerk who decided to fix a non-problem by asserting his authority.

The Idaho Stop should be country wide....it's silly to make cyclists stop at every stop sign. Cyclists aren't motorized vehicles.

To be honest I even find the full stop in a car a bit excessive some times when you're going slow and had plenty of time to see that no one was coming.

I'm not sure how a cop giving a ticket to a person who breaks the law makes him/her a jerk.

It is their job to enforce laws.

Google "Idaho Stop." There is no discernible difference in accident rates in Idaho, where bicyclists have rolled stop signs since 1982.

But if we split hairs, the issue with a car is that often you have to stick the front end in the intersection to look far enough left or right.

A bike doesn't have such a problem.

If there are visual obstructions, which isn't always the case. I am not suggesting that cars shouldn't be required by law to make a full stop btw, just to be clear.

See reference to a study showing injuries declined after the "Idaho Stop" was enacted:

Why cyclists should be able to roll through stop signs and ride through red lights - Vox

I also once read a piece that explained that after the adoption of the "Idaho Rule" bike-car collisions decreased and then leveled off. Can't seem to find it right now.

There is also this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idaho_stop

"Idaho is both the largest and longest practitioner of the safe stop. Mark McNeese, Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator for the Idaho Transportation Department says that 'Idaho bicycle-collision statistics confirm that the Idaho law has resulted in no discernible increase in injuries or fatalities to bicyclists.'"

For the most part, if you were either robbed or had your car stolen, unless it was really high-dollar stuff (Lamborghini or $50K in jewelry), I wouldn't expect much police help anyway other than to take down a report for insurance purposes.

stop signs are for revenue generating. sure, when there are traffic or people crossing the road, you will make a stop. but to make you to make a complete stop every single time even when there is no people or car around, now that's complete waste of time and energy.

Think about the gas that we could save as a society if we don't have to get the car moving from complete stop when there is nobody around the an intersection, and can craw through that intersection instead.

The same goes for 65 mph speed limit on the freeway even when modern cars have improved stability and braking performance.

Its all about making money to pay for the salary of the people that write us ticket, so that they can make more money. If we as a society just don't break any law for a month so they can't write us any ticket or arrest anyone, they wouldn't know what to do all their "employees" sitting there doing nothing, generating no revenue. haha~

If I rolled through a stop sign here, and a cop saw it, I'd expect a ticket. Seems fair.

if a motorist is eligible for a ticket then so to must a cyclist be. rules of the road are not 'optional'. if motorists and cyclist banded together to change the rule then maybe it would be a worthwhile complaint, at this point i don't see this as anything special or cyclist hate or what ever....
