Shimano fc-s501 crankset missing the non drive dust cap

Is it that big of a deal to not have it installed? As I recall, it is some piece of soft crappy plastic anyways.

There is not a dust cap on Shimano HTII cranks. If you are talking about #1 in this exploded diagram from Shimano it is a crank arm fixing bolt and yes you want it.

If you are missing one you can order something from Wheels Manufacturing you just need to make sure you get the correct one for that crank.

Here is a link for a .stl to 3D Print one out. You can also print out a tool for it...

That is neat but it is not a mere dust cap and from reading the sellers (or makers or whatever you might call them?) description it doesn't look like more than an emergency use part that hopefully will work.

Once you tighten the two crank arm screws then it doesn’t do anything. It’s a bit like the top cap on a stem ie it provides a small preload until you torque down the actual clamping screws.

So on that basis a 3-D printed version should be fine. All it needs to do is push the crank arm fully onto the spline.

It gets tightened to 0.7-1.5 Nm during original installation. I'm sure it can handle that massive torque, and as said, does nothing once the clamp bolts are tightened.

Maybe just find a big cork and put in there to garner some odd looks and start conversations with potential new friends.

If you do read the persons description of it it is not a great description for even low torque. The actual cap is for preload but a cap that will deform is not ideal and the description made it sound like that was a huge possibility.

the actual cap is also a cheap plastic POS that will deform if you preload too much. Kind of Shimano's way of idiot proofing. Either way, serves no purpose except to keep mud daubers from building a nest in the hollow spindle once the arm bolts are tightened.
