Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My parents were raised like that. One time they were visiting from Pennsylvania, and we were trying to figure out whether there was any particular thing they wanted to do, or place they wanted to go. They'd been out here a number of times, so they'd been to all the obvious places. Dad mentioned something vague about wineries in Amador county, but that was about it. It took half an hour of, "Whatever you want to do" before I finally said, "Tell me what you want to do!!" And Dad said he'd been to Napa and Sonoma enough times that he wasn't interested in going there anymore, but he really wanted to go check out the wineries in Amador County.

So we did, and had a great time, and got a dozen bottles of really intense Zinfandel that Dad really liked. But he couldn't just come out and SAY IT!!

I was out on my driveway, cleaning up an old Ultegra/Mavic MA3 rear wheel I decided to use as a "training wheel", so I can just swap it onto the Ritchey when I want to use the trainer. My neighbor rolls up, on a blue CF road bike, disc brakes etc. Kinda looks like my Canyon. We talked briefly - probably more words than we've exchanged in the 15-20 years we've been neighbors. I mean we've each seen the other rolling out or coming back from rides and never said, 'Hey, we should ride together sometime', and I don't see that changing now, what with the Covids and everything.

Oh, yeah - full Rapha kit, which goes with the Audis and MBZs in his driveway.

Me? A 6 year old Dodge, a 19 year old Toyota, and my kit is an amalgam of Performance, Louis Garneau, Pearl Izumi, and some Castelli, now that I'm light enough to just fit their XXL. Soon it will be time to break out the 20 year old Bellwhether arm warmers and 10 year old PI leg warmers.......

I drove out for some takeout. On the way there, a road cyclist was headed in the same direction. Over the course of a mile or so, the guy kept filtering up at lights and making me re-pass him, four times in total.

I just don't understand why you would do that. Given the timing and spacing of the lights on that street, a cyclist moving at a decent pace probably wouldn't have to deal with more that one pod of vehicles. Why, then, would you turn 5 or 6 passes into 20+? Not only is the math worse, but it's just annoying to those that need to repeatedly make an effort to not kill you.

This is funny. UK lost in overtime. LOL

Question for the group: Which team won its eight straight game today? Limit one guess per contestant.
