I'm not even going to consider the twisted psychology of shops willing to put a salesman on the floor who's willing to sell the most expensive 10% bikes from 10% of the full lineup of the brands they proport to carry.

An expensive gravel bike with lots of braze-ons for doing - at most - effective commuting with panniers? Not buying it. Put a longer stem on the Brooklyn Bicycles Briggs, a pair of panniers, and you're done. $600 and change out the door.

Similar can be had with 7 and 8 speed IGH hubs for hilly terrain.

Why do Mormons ride MTB's?
I dunno, perhaps because there were no "Valley" bikes available?
Best, Ben

You ever been to Provo, that’s what I would buy, not exactly flat.

Not limited to Mormons either. A Pentecostal Pastor I had (deceased) was a missionary in Pakistan and rode a Delta V with the pink triangle and black speckled paint. I bought it and rode it for years until a car ran over it. He rode it everywhere and he said it gathered a lot of attention. I wish I still had it now

Aluminum hybrids, barely functional suspension fork and all, make great general-purpose bikes, not suited to (in fact, all but invisible to) bike enthusiasts but a good choice for utility use.
