It's not ugly, but it is ridiculous. This bike only does one thing well, parades. And for that task, its supremely suited. Turns out those big round tires do wonderful doughnuts in the street which thrills the parade watchers.

But riding it the 10 miles to and from the parade is quite a challenge.

And yes, I have commuted on it.

You could put an engine in there and have a mini cruiser...

Oh rats... I sold my ugly bike years ago. I had this really ugly rusty girls frame bike that I had restored all the moving parts on... the thing was just plain ugly... bent rusty basket in front and wheels and spokes only a mother could love.

I rode it to college for a couple of semesters... I could park it anywhere and no one would touch it... no lock required. Even the seat looked dirty.

I bought for a 6 pack of Pacifico; cleaned up the bearings and chain and rode it for a year and then sold it for a 6 pack of Pacifico to another student.

Oh I think my crazy bike will fit here well. Since we're now a one car family, this is my main source of transportation. My uncle decided it needed streamers, a bell, and a mirror so he bought them for me. Of course that meant I had to put them on. lol My goodwill find basket and "pannier" give it a nice touch too. The red strap is actually supposed to be used to turn a regular dog leash into a two dog leash. lol Yes, I'm cheap.

What can I say, I rode my bikes for years, unmodified and stock outside of the addition of a saddle bag or a brake pad upgrade, but then I started reading bike blogs and bike forums. Next thing you know I'm tinkering and swapping parts without any guidance outside of the internet, which is at best a confusing and often contradictory source.

Those things in the front wheel are crazy bright, super obnoxious, POV wheel lights from Monkeylectric; first generation M232s.

They make a smaller and subtler version now, the M210 Mini Monkey, which I have on my current commuters:

Summer bike

Winter bike (you can barely make out the light in this pic, it's at the top of wheel under the tire logo). Which would also qualify as a ridiculous bike, if you've never ridden through an Anchorage winter.

Which might be a problem for this thread; commuters care more about what's practical than what's sexy.

True enough, sir; that is a very pretty, utterly ridiculous bicycle. That chain guard and rear fender are crazy sexy! I used to work with a guy who commuted (two miles, summer only) on a stretched out low rider, all pretty blue paint and twisted steel. It only had one gear and you couldn't stand over the pedals, so he had to walk it up the Hillcrest hill every day on his way home (for which I would mock him whenever I rode by him), but man did he love that bike.

Sadly (or luckily), no pictures, but I just put out of its misery a bike that could have been a contender in this thread. I started with one of these:

that I found at the dump with no saddle / post and a big dent in the downtube. After abusing it to make sure it wouldn't break, it became my kid-seat cruiser then trail-a-bike tractor. It also was an organ donor for several other bikes in our household, so the stem was swapped for a high-rise teal stem from a mid-90s GT mountain bike, the bars were swapped for a black flat bar chopped down to fixie length, the cranks were swapped for some of those plastic-coated all steel cranks, the decent street-tread tires were swapped for cheap knobbies, and the SRAM 3.0 shifters / derailleurs were swapped for some old nameless shimano junk.

The wheels had rust on the spokes in a pattern that suggested a sight-impaired dog was marking his territory, and the frame was covered in household paint splatter. In the end, it became too ugly even for my low standards.

That made me think of the jugalos when I saw that, but it does kind of fit with the rest of the bike.

Those bikes don't look bad, but the weather sure does.
