Its flat wide open to the wind (isn't everything here?!), but I have a 21 mile stretch of road available that I don't use often enough for intervals.
I plan on using it a lot more this year once im outside doing 10+ minute intervals.

If I want to do a truly hard MTB ride, I'm riding by myself (unless it's a race). I'm trying to get a couple of the road-only dudes to ride on the dirt, but that seems unlikely. A few hours north there are some seriously strong dudes (Jeremiah Bishop, for example), though.
Whereas, when I'm out in CO for the summer, I just text a couple of the dudes I know and I'm riding with guys that were top-30 at Pro XC nats a couple years ago. And I'll get my teeth kicked in if I'm not 100%.

I've got about three loops with all right turns and minimal or no stops in between. All are reasonably well-known among the local community as places you can go to get in some intervals without too much interruption. None of them are really perfect (at least the nearest two certainly aren't), but even if there's a light at one of the turns, an all right-hander loop is pretty effective. @hack is there no way to incorporate something like that? After all Greater Boston is a significant metropolitan area, so surely if we can make it work here it can work most places.
That said, it sure was sweet when I lived in Western Massachusetts near Amherst and had a 9 mile, uninterrupted, quiet, flat stretch of road on which to do intervals. You could pretty much do 20 minutes one way, get to the end, and do 20 minutes the other way. Can't beat that.

About 15min outside of town you really don't have to worry about stopping on a ride more than once or twice. Like I'll do 5:01 and register 5hrs of moving time, it's that good. GC has it even better up where he is.

Empty country roads are a short 5 minute ride from home, but a couple minutes into the ride I realized I forgot to charge my tail light. So, those were out.
We have the “canal” which is a bike trail/canal service road closed to traffic that is flat and straight for some 20 miles. This one is about 10 minutes from home. caloso knows of it and I ususally do my intervals work out there, but didn't feeling like heading down that way.

Hip is continuing to show steady improvement. Today was threshold intervals. 3min and 3x6min at threshold with 10min at sweetspot. 90min total.

TBH, I did a 1:38 ride this morning, took two bottles and didn't touch the second one. Average temperature was 32. During the summer here, though, I would've finished both and been looking for something to drink as soon as I got home. I did a hundred mile race, went through six bottles and didn't have to pee until two beers after the finish.

That seems right. This time of year I can do 5hrs on 3 bottles provided I'm hydrated before I leave. When it is warm out I generally go through a bottle an hour.

It's that time in a rest week where I go through menopause. 2hrs of whatever, and afterward I'll probably watch something starring Meg Ryan.

Monday Easy
Tuesday: 1.5 hours in the rain with a few VO2ish efforts, but my Hill is steep and my commuter is over geared so they were kinda slow. Maybe 115% (no power on that bike). Almost ran over a skunk.
Wednesday: 2.5 hours, moderate pace commute, zone 3 on hills and easy on descents.
Thursday: Group ride plus commute, 3.5 hours.
Today easy.
Tomorrow 3 or 4 hour team ride
Sunday race

2.5 hours on the rollers. 4*10', 5*30" seated, 45' high z2/low z3. original goal was to do 7*30" efforts but given how ruined i was after last weekend i backed it down. i guess the ultimate decided will be how my fitness is once race season gets going, but so far i'm really really happy with the inside ride rollers. best cycling related purchase i've made in a long time.

2.5hrs of endurance (165w) with 15min of 230w at the end (because my coach wants me to suffer, clearly). Hip still improving and handling this tough week well. Another 2.5hrs of plain endurance tomorrow.

Ftp test today. Up 7% year over year, so I guess that's a plus. Always a bummer to have to adjust zones down, reason and emotion/ego always conflict on that one.

Team cross ride. Cold as balls but we still managed to sweat through our jackets.
I'm always surprised how fast vo2max comes in. After only three Z5 workouts in the past week I'm already feeling like I've got another gear. Enough so that I wondered if my power meter was reading high. But I checked times and power on a couple of specific efforts and it all looks right.

I hate you.
I picked up a cross bike. Maybe I can ride with you guys. That is if you are willing to wait.

Bro! Come over any time, seriously. The cross-friendly trail riding around here is world class. I almost got gsteinb up here a couple of times but something always got in the way.
