Upgrade the LED on the Busch & Müller Lumotec IQ Cyo?
I recently upgraded my edc flashlight from a 2011 Cree XP-G S2 LED to a 2012 Cree XP-G2 R5. The top-end lumens incrased from 270 to 380 in just 1 year!
This got me thinking:
1. Are headlight makers (B&M, etc) upgrading their LEDs in their headlights year-over-year?
2. Can I replace the LED on my 2010 Lumotec IQ Cyo with a newer, more powerful LED?
Just idle speculation—haven't cracked open my existing Cyo's casing & checked out what the guts are made of.
Tailwinds,
—Noel

IIRC, Supernova designer their lights so the LED could be upgraded (by the manufacturer). I don't think any other light manufacturer has done anything like that. Most bike-specific lights are designed sealed, so they would be hard to open to get to the LED. Not saying it couldn't be done, but the feasibility is questionable.

Mine uses an XRE... updating to XPE/G would alter the beam pattern (likely not for the better).

I thought the cyo uses a reflector in such a way that the led shape probably will not affect the beam pattern all that much. It would be interesting to know if they are upgrading them at the factory. There are definitely different versions out there of the same model

Yes, B&M has upgraded their lights. at least by bringing in several new models, some available this week. And no, they aren't made to be disassembled or upgraded by consumers. Here's the pdf from B&M (https://www.bumm.de/fileadmin/user_up...3__english.pdf) and the new Luxos headlights on page 8. If you look on page 5 you'll see what was stated above about the role of the reflectors (and now prisms) in shaping the beam.
I've ordered one of these new lights, looking forward to having the button for the high beam.

ya, waiting for that high beam myself.
Just because something isn't made for upgrading doesn't mean it can't be upgraded, people do that all the time. As Znomit said though, it's complex because they keep changing the emitter dimensions

interesting they went to a better heat sink on the premium. Your posts in that second CPF thread are really hard to follow without pics. You modified a star board to fit in the light?

I'd love to have a Cyo Premium, but with a good recent "neutral white" LED. As I get older it seems like my eyeballs get more sensitive to the high blue output of the cheaper LED's they often use. :-/
