fixie category in the r1 race
since there are at least two teams competing in r1 completely on fixies, craig from strangers informs me that makes it a category. which is, of course, good for me and the rest of the trackstar racing team, since we have been planning on riding fixies all along.
i think that the other team (so far) is from los angeles. is there anyone else from the forums planning on doing this fixie? if so, you should slap a team together. i think it would be really cool if there was a bikeforums team.
just get in some long distance rides first. you'd be surprised at how much saddle pain you get. just look at the last page of the ny weekend ride thread if you doubt.

back to topic, are any of you guys doing it and still need a team? Or need one more? I'm interested. It would mean missing the New Pornographers show in Prospect Park, but I think I could deal with that. It sounds like it will be amazing fun. Amazing, brutal fun. Yes.

i know some dc folks are thinking about it.
i would totally do it if it weren't for the money i'd lose taking that many days off work. i'm still thinking about just doing the first several weekend stages, but i'm not sure that's worth it.

anyone know how the time trial will work? closed course? will they let the riders go at different intervals? or is it just a mass start with a timed finish...?

yeah, saddle pain is seriously ******** brutal on long rides -- especially on steep ass geometry. i need like 8 chamois in my shorts to avoid the death, heh.

c'mon guys, put a team together and race us! it'll be so much fun.
just talked to craig about the the time trial and here's the deal: prolly start near east houston, go up 1st ave, through the park, down west side hwy, back to e. houston. it'll be individual trials separated by time and run like "real" tt's, but through traffic and parks. prolly like 3 minutes in between starts.
there will be cred for the trial, but it will also count for indy times on the whole trip. don't know about team scores re trials.

If I do it, I'm doing it all fixed. But right now, with a bunch of my coworkers already signed up and having taken the whole week off work...I'm probably not going.

ahem... I'm willing to use up two of the paltry ten vacation days I get per calendar year to do this race. Because it sounds like it's going to be one of those things that you'll tell your grandkids about (IT'S A FIVE DAY STAGE RACE FROM BOSTON TO NEW YORK FOR CHRISSAKES!!!). So, is anyone interested in forming a team? I really don't know anyone else who would be willing to this who's not already doing it (especially take off work for it). I've done a bunch of touring, so I'm used to long days of 60-100 miles. Step it up. Let's give Msngr some competition.

I'm seriously considering doing this race, but my main concern is sleeping arrangements. 100 bucks seems a bit cheap considering it's supposed to cover "housing" and food expenses for the full four days of the event. Does anyone here have any info on this issue, or could PM me the email address to someone who does?

Man I must say I am jealous of you guys doing this ride. My partner in crime for such things is a coworker at the bike shop and if both of us are gone for that long the place would go to ****s. As it is we are doing a double century Saturday and taking the shop van, I'll be shocked if the place is still standing on Sunday. I expect pics and lots of stories though and good luck to all who go.
