Hi, I am not only new the forum, but also new to riding. I’ve never been a cyclist. Before this weekend, the last time I rode a bike was 20 years ago. The ride, on the local bike trail, ended in a fairly nasty accident, and I didn’t ride again after I recovered.
My husband used to cycle regularly, but had a number of years where he could not due to back and hip problems. Over a few years, he had a couple of back surgeries and both hips replaced. There was a lot of recovery, but he’s back to cycling now, and suggested I might want to join him. So, this weekend, I picked up a nicely maintained 2001 GT Windstream. I decided to just get a very inexpensive, used “starter” bike to get myself going. As I get more experienced and comfortable, I can figure out what I want for the long term.
Yesterday, we rode around the neighborhood to get me used to the bike. Today, we went out to the bike trail and went 18 miles. I was surprised at how well I did, especially as I am now 55. Plus, I wasn’t afraid like I thought I might be. I had a lot of fun! My exercise is typically on indoor, stationary machines like treadmills, and cycling on the trail was a lot more exciting. I am looking forward to riding more, as well as learning more about cycling.

Hi Laurie, welcome to Bike Forums!
Im in NorCal too, in Contra Costa County. Will you ever be near me sometime? Maybe you and your husband can take a ride with me and I can show you some really nice easy paved trails.

Thanks for the welcomes. I will definitely be looking at the 50+ sub forum.
I went for for a short 5 mile ride on my break today (I telecommute) and really enjoyed being able to do that.
Siu Blue Wind, I’m rarely in the Contra Costa area, but maybe after I get better and stronger, I can check out bike clubs. Possibly there are some northern California ones. That could be fun.
