Anyone here rock an oldschool leather helmet?

I like the way they look (in theory) more than the new fangled helmets, but I think I would feel silly wearing one.

I'm moving to Chicago from Detroit in a couple of weeks and am thinking of starting to wear a helmet but I hate most helmets and kind of agree with the people that say helmet test results are bogus and if you're in a bad enough crash a helmet won't save you. I figure a leather one is a nice compromise because it will prevent you from getting road rash on your head if you have a minor collision with the ground.

Those things are tiny. They barely cover your head (unless you have a small head). Very little padding, huge gaps.

If you're going to have a collision that will result in road rash, it won't be minor.

It's like going to a gunfight with a water pistol.

If you're going to wear a helmet, wear a real one. If you're not, then don't. Wear a cycling cap or something.

While stylish, I would get a real helmet. They've saved me numerous times. When you see your helmet split down the middle and you know it would have been your head, you appreciated it. Not trying to turn this into a helmet vs. no helmet debate, wear it or don't based on your own assessment of risk.

Yeah I don't want this thread to start a helmet vs no helmet war. I've ignored enough of those. New fangled helmet it is.

My friend told me that the leather helmets were a capable/stylish way to "keep your ears from shearing off" in a crash, but not much else.

Dude if you're gonna rock an old leather helmet why not just rock the WWI fighter pilot canvass helmet. That'd look badass with a set of the goggles. Hmm, maybe I should do that...

Hockey goalies used to wear a goalie cap which they'd wear just like a baseball catcher only without the mask. Yeah, that's useful.

misuse of the product consists solely of wearing the product for the use it was originally intended for. too good. "buy a helmet, helmets go on your head, but putting this helmet on your head is a misuse of it."

Yeah, but they're not crazy enough to call it a helmet. Note that it's a "Hairnet Head Cover".

wern't those oldschool leathers brought back in a rivival? i swear i saw some racers wearing some in a race in the last decade?

and by the way, you should just wear a beret, with th einflated head you'd have you would have no use for a helmet.

a snug fitting beanie would prevent your ears getting sheared off better.

alternatively: a balaclava.

I CRUSHED my blue helmet two weeks ago.
I went back to the crash site yesterday and there is still a blue stripe in the middle of the street.
All the momentum of my 200 lb body was absorbed by my helmet and my now severely crushed shoulder.
Wear a helmet and stick around long enough to tell us about your trip.

Enjoy
