Sweet move. That dude's lucky, but he could've avoided all that if he'd stopped/slowed enough to see if a car was coming in the empty lane. It seems he had a walk signal but I always assume cars will run lights/signs, etc. and look anyway.

He actually had a WALK signal, but he isn't a pedestrian, and should have been on the other side of the cross street waiting for the light, like any other vehicle. I'm glad he is okay, and the driver was an asshat for speeding through a ped signal, but that guy is part of the problem.

Indeed the cyclist had a walk signal and the car ran the red. Don't really want to turn this into an A&S debate, especially since seattle's bike laws are way different than just about everywhere else, just thought it was a cool vid.

hhmmm.. glad he is fine and have good reflex but somehow I feel like it is unreal.. Seems like he knew exactly what was going to happen and didn't even try to slow down crossing that last lane. But again, it might just be me.. damn, that was a close call and nice move!!

Actually the best move in this circumstance is probably to get your body up and onto the hood of the car. In this video, if the car hadn't been able to stop in time he'd've been run over. A better cyclist would've seen the car coming too.

I cross an intersection that looks very similar. It's a ped/bike crossing behind a light rail track that's about 4 car lengths before the intersection.
Like in the video it is 4 lanes. Even though the traffic light might be red, people drive over the crossing to get on the other side of the tracks and wait there. And if a car or two turn right while the light is red, the cars behind them may move up. So just because they're stopped at the moment, you have know idea if they're going to stay stopped. And since it's 4 lanes wide with another line of cars between you and them, it's hard to tell whether they see you or not. It's probably the most dangerous intersection on my commute and it's a marked crossing.

This is a great example of a cyclist who was not paying close enough attention. Expect the unexpected. In traffic like that, and travelling perpendicular across more than one lane, always expect traffic on the other side. It's not like there was a truck there obstructing his view, and if there was, would he be so thick as to ride out in front of a truck without looking to his right first? He may have had a walk signal, but the light was red. No telling what color the light was going right to left.
I never trust Walk/Don't Walk, I go by what traffic is doing and what drivers are doing around me. NEVER would I do something as stupid as this cyclist did, riding in between cars. You may say he had the Walk indicator, but he was riding, and being right and in the hospital (which he isn't) is worse than being careful and paying attention to your surroundings.

According to the Seattle Department to Transportation he's allowed to ride in the crosswalk:
I'm glad the cyclist looks okay. I am worried about the bike however.
Section 11.44.100 RIGHT-OF-WAY IN CROSSWALK.
A person operating a bicycle across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall have all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances, but shall yield to pedestrians upon and along a crosswalk. No person operating a bicycle shall suddenly enter a crosswalk into the path of a vehicle which is so close that the driver cannot yield safely.

Hmm. Cyclist was not in the crosswalk and the car seemed to have entered the roadway from the parking lot (behind the black car) so was not controlled by the traffic light. I think the cyclist was at fault. Luckily the car was stopping at the time of impact. I'm sure that the angle of the sun didn't help either.

This thought would take about two seconds on my bike, five minutes to type out and correct spelling. My point was that this is the kind of cyclist who gives us commuters a bad name. Cool move, but I would never, ever put myself in a position to use it.

Drivers do a lot of dumb things during congested traffic. What was that lady thinking? That there's nobody (pedestrians) in the crosswalk so I'll sneak up to the other side of the intersection?

Cyclists choosing to take advantage of crosswalk signals should dismount and WALK, not ride (as a vehicle). We can't have it both ways.
