I do have to say that this is the best part of bike forum that I have followed maybe because it has the most interest to me along with the nicest people. I also feel the whole forum which covers anything and everything bikes is better than most of the Facebook groups I have followed. I do like the cycling after 60 bunch. They are too old to argue and do a lot of riding in cool places.

But in general, the internet is a cesspool of anonymous angry comments and incivility.

As said by many before, the C&V group is the mellowest on this forum. I post questions here that I really think should be posted in the mechanics section just because I know I will be treated with more respect here. I just want to ride my bike.

I've been here for a while now. I think this is one of the more positive and better forums on the internet. I've yet to see any bashing here. Heck I've posted pink weird vintage BMX's and received nothing but positive support.
People disagreeing on here is how people like me learn. For example..
"Hey guys I just found this (insert what ever super rare grail bike) I think the color sucks so I want to spay paint it with what ever color I can find on sale at the hardware store, and despite never welding in my life I wanna weld on disk brakes"
Well one guy is going to respond "Don't you know if you repaint that super rare grail bike, it will end up being worthless?"
And another may reply "Well make sure you use aircraft stripper and X brand paint for the best jobs. Also I found with my super grail bike adding this style brake was easy and makes the bike ride so much better"
Obviously these two viewpoints are going to butt heads a little. But for me I learn about super rare grail bike being collectible and worth something, and I also learn techniques on how to fix something. SO IMHO no view points should be regulated for being too negative.

I totally agree with this sentiment and am the same way. I would rather ask here than the mechanics forum. For the most part I have had good experiences. If I feel slighted, I try not to engage. Don't want things to spiral out of hand.

I like how C&V is a holistic section where we talk about more than bikes, and off topic threads are not thrown out. We also allow discussion of new bikes, of rides, of mechanics, and so much more. And yes, people are generally very nice.

I'm a friendly guy. When someone posts in here about the vintage Firenze or Free Spirit they inherited from their uncle, and is eager to restore it... I and most other folks in here will give polite advice to walk away. Sometimes these people though are unwilling to hear negative comments and remain stubbornly, irrationally, exuberant. That's when slapping them around a little bit is doing them a favor.
One such poster responded to me (thanking me for my polite response) and I explained that we wanted him to become a cyclist like us... and if he spent his time and money on polishing a turd, he would be disappointed and never join the club.

I did grin when setting it on the street for salvage. I bought that just to hang inside the vintage shop but wondered if the weight would have pushed a wall out of plumb.

I agree with OP wholeheartedly. Blatant negativity has no place here.
I personally have had nothing but good vibes here, even when I’ve asked dumb questions, or failed to do an adequate search beforehand. It’s refreshing to see so many helpful and friendly posts take the majority over negative bashing, something you see frequently on other forums.
Sure there is some snark here and there, but it’s the internet and we are also all human...it’s kind of inevitable.

I love this place. I wish I could actually ride with most of you. Sit down and drink a beer with you. I sometime devolve (on my posts here) into the same mental state that I do with the friends at work, where we goofishly BS around with each other, and playfully poke and provoke each other. It's all meant in a brotherly love sort of way. I've never tried to be mean to anyone here, or their rides, or anything really. Bicyclist are a small group of the whole out there, and the C&V types are a mere micro subset of that already small bicycle subset. We really are a very thinly sliced serving of weirdos, and I mean that in the most loving terms possible. I recently talked with a manager of the local bicycle coop, and even those looking for basic bicycles as transportation, even those people shy away from drop bar, multi-speed, manual shifting bicycles. So, love your brothers and sisters out there, and here too.

I click "New Posts" and so I see quite a few C&V threads that sound interesting to me. I can't think of the last thread comment that seemed mean spirited. Good job! But it's always good to stop and think before posting.
I do cringe a little on the repaint threads. My first choice is always to keep original condition, even if it damaged. And I don't get the Schwinn Varsity threads, those bikes are heavy!
Woah, that Huffy commercial is amazing!

There's the guy who got a mint Miyata 1000, immediately spray painted it day-glo colors and THEN decided he didn't like it.
