Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Interesting stats - because they bear out my (unscientific) observation at RAGBRAI 2011:

Seemed to me that about half the bikes were Treks. The rest were either Giant or Specialized, with all other brands representing what seemed to be a pretty small fraction.

What's really interesting, though, is how that all changes when you go to a race. There, the big players seem (again, according to my unscientific observation) to be Cervelo, Cannondale, Specialized, and Guru. It would be interesting to see some more formal stats showing what people race in crits and road races.

Re RAGBRAI: I think that's a function of Midwesterness more than anything else. In the NorCal racing scene, I think it would go Specialized, Cannondale, Trek, Cervelo, And then lots of everyone else.

If the question is really about brand loyalty..I think Specialized has the upper-hand, Trek has the most to lose.

I have, but only expensive Trek road bikes in the local high end sporting goods store - funny never see people riding them and when I was looking for a flat bar road bike, they told me they didn't stock the FX line, so went down the street & bought a Giant.

Until I joined BF and saw how many people ride them, I thought maybe their marketing was like BMW or Mercedes.

There are two major trek dealers in my area but I never see them on the road, mostly Spech and I rarely see another Cdale. Odd cause me and my brother have 2 Treks and 1 Cdale where is all this Spech coming from.

I live between chicago and milwaukee, Trek has been huge here for decades. off the top of my head I'd say trek outsells all other brands combined in this area by at least a 2:1 margin. C'dale then Spesh are ~tied for a very distant second place.
