This came with a bike I picked up at an estate sale yesterday. Not a roll, more of a zippered taco, but I thought I might load it up with tools for the old bikes.

Two wrenches, an empty patch kit, and some pump parts are all that’s left.

Anybody recognize these bits?

It's great when interesting stuff is bundled with a new bike purchase. This was found in the saddle bag of the Trek I got yesterday.

The bungee is from Blackburn, which I've never seen before. I'll probably keep it along with the bag and vintage Park tire levers. Not sure what I'll do with the rest of it. There was also a new tubular tire folded in the bag.

I almost never carry a multi tool. Almost never. Mistakenly, I counted on my wrenching to keep a bike ready. Better wrenches have proven me wrong.

Hilly Hundred 2019. American Classic seat post came apart on a long climb. At the top, steelbikeguy fixed it. (I got 2nd KOM for the “long stand.” Fear of intimate impalement is adrenaline.)

Wisconsin rides 2020. Snapped RD hanger. Multi tool with a chain breaker almost got me to the end as a single speed.

Saturday, St. Louis. My metal “out in front“ Garmin/HL mount broke. It bolts to the front of a modern stem; the bolts go through a long crosswise slot instead of two holes, then through the lower face plate holes. The mount broke at the slot. Somehow, the very minute portions of it that remained did manage to hold the stem tight on the bar. It would have been very dangerous and certainly a face plant had this 1 square mm of material given way. I actually rode it that way for a mile or so. Once we stopped, the realization sunk in. Near disaster. I used a multi tool to tighten it up after removing the broken bits. Then my saddle started moving up/down on the tilt. Carbon rails and some side-clamping posts do not play together. Again, multi tool handy. Rode the bike on Sunday; noted one of the upper stem face plate bolts coming out; threads stripped. So, new stem, no more Chinese Garmin mounts of that design. I was one bump away from serious booboos.

Multi tool handy, so it’s now permanent.

Quick links?

Dumb question but what's the idea here. Do these tend to pop off the chain?

They don't if installed properly and are the correct one for the chain being used.

It is more critical if the chain is worn.

Nope...at least in the current form. SRAM had some old ones that tended to crack but they were completely different from what is currently used. I often reuse them even though many are supposed to be single use. Never been an issue.

I’ve seen quick links pop off unexpectedly. Happened to a friend a few years back, and we spent a long time looking for the two parts along the road (and did find them eventually). Perhaps it was user error, but he’s normally a good mechanic.
