Good God... what an appalling development. As a multi-decade surviving cyclist, I can attest that I did not come to a complete stop at STOP signs, I would be dead many times over.
Most of my near misses were grey colored cars at dusk. You think you are completely clear, absolutely, positively, and then you start accelerating, and Holy S****, a large object is coming at you as if out of nowhere.
Second biggest source of near misses was ninja cyclists and peds. Dark clothing, hoody (to further restrict vision) no lights, and organ-donor riding style.
Another good reason for vigorously enforced cyclist traffic laws: you pick up lots of folks with outstandings, stolen property, and illegal substances via the occasional helmet law sweep.

I usually roll through stops as I can and when safe to do so. I get yelled at by people (usually pick up trucks?). These are folks going the same or opposite direction as me , not cross traffic folks. I don't understand why it is a problems long as you yield to those that have right of way. I sense a growing animosity towards cyclists around here in Southern California since the "share the road" laws came into affect a couple of years ago. I try to stay as far to the right as safe when riding , but still get the occasional horn honking finger waving from those that don't/won't understand the cycling laws. Part of the problem is law enforcement, twice in the last year I have been cut off and brushed by police cars while in bike paths. Joe

You can't see why they might resent the fact that you choose to break the law when it's convenient to do so, while at the same time taking advantage of laws that inconvenience them in order to stay safe?
ford with the double tires on the rear. He pulled up next to me and swerved at me several times. I saw him pull into a best buy parking lot. I quizzed him as to why he swerved at me. He had got worked up about some racer types blocking the lane on a two lane road up a canyon, maybe 12-15 miles from where he spotted me. I cautioned him about getting that angry. I also told him I would prefer it if he took his rage out on someone else besides me.

Obviously so long as I am on my bike on the road I am part of traffic. I am part of traffic even if I am on my street, a dead end, and there are no moving cars within a mile. But that's not the same as me being on my bike at the major intersection three miles from my house where a road with two turn lanes crosses a two-lane road with two turn lanes at a light. if I am at that intersection, a busy intersection, and as is often the case, there are several cars in each lane waiting to go and a steady stream of cars crossing in two lanes and using the right turn-lane and waiting on the left, in each direction ......
Perhaps you can understand the total equation of vehicles on the road, which actually includes every connected road, path, or trail on the entire two continents, and the more localized equation of the total number of cars which are impacted by my immediate presence and are immediately able to impact me.

Was cycling in Idaho last week. Totally forgot about it at first. To tell you the truth, there were not to many stop signs and traffic lights where I was.

Yea, Resentment is one thing, that is on the individual. Acting out in a malicious or unsafe manor is another. I am not sure who "they" are but, when I am in a bike lane , I don't need someone cutting me off or driving in a manor that jeopardizes my safety. That was my point. That's all, Joe

My primary concern in reaching an intersection with cars is to avoid getting hurt.
Common sense is good. Treating others with respect is also good. Behaving dangerously or selfishly is bad. So is being a hypocrite. It's good to be a responsible and considerate citizen.
Does any of this apply to bicyclists and intersections? I don't know. Each should behave according to the dictates of their conscience.

I own my responsibility as a cyclist to behave in a way that encourages drivers to treat us cyclists with fairness and safety. I can see that we would all benefit from some sort of understanding all perspectives. I really like this forum for just that reason, it gets us to think outside of our own self. I ride alone and generally have no one to "bounce" things off. I , as a driver , get frustrated when I see groups of cyclists riding three abreast when there is no room to go around. In southern California we are very densely populated and a little thought goes a long way. Joe

RCW 46.61.110
States that a driver of a vehicle "shall pass" a bicycle or pedestrian on the road way with a "clearly safe distance"
It does not say "may" pass. Therefore the driver is instructed, by law cross a double yellow line to get around a pedestrian or cyclist when is is safe to do so at a safe distance.
There is another law to get around any blockage. Horse & buggy, fallen tree, farm tractor, etc...it doesn't matter what. I need to go look the RCW number up. Bottom line: Crossing a double yellow line to pass is permitted unless it is another licensed vehicle.
I have, on ocassion had the opportunity to talk to drivers. (Only if I thought it germane) I have finished up our little chat with:
"You ain't gotta get mad at me. It's not my fault you don't know the law."
You'd be surprised how many licensed drivers had no idea how/when/who they could pass legally.
