Freaking tires

What's the deal with modern tires and rims? I'm talking regular clinchers not tubs, or tubless. I've been fighting with a tire for over an hour, hard to remove hard to remount, seemingly impossible to mount straight. I've been riding for 40 years and remember when tires where easy peasy to get off and put back on again. What if anything are we gaining from modern tires being such a pain in the arse? currently arguing with Panaracer GravelKing Tire Slick 650 x 42 on mavic rims.

What do you mean by "mount straight"?

I'm currently struggling with a 25mm Conti GP4000 on a Vittoria wheelset. Sooo tight. Never had a problem with these tires before but I think there are just some tire/wheel combos that don't work well together. I've never had a problem with a Panaracer tire before, on several different wheelsets.

After I mount the tire it looks like the wheel is super out of true but really it's the tire not going on straight.

Tires are either on or they aren't. If they're on and they are wobbly then it's a manufacturing defect. Clement had this problem a couple years back. If it's wobbly and it's not a manufacturing defect then it's the bead that isn't set in place yet.

Panaracer has an issue with out of round/true tires. Of the 12 tires I've purchased from them since 2015, 3 have been severely out of round to the point that it could be seen and also felt while riding. If you've got an even bead line all the way around and it's still wobbly, the tire was made wrong.

My thumbs are always bloody I finally bought a Kool Stop tire bead jack. But I remember the days where changing tires was easy. I had a few cussing episodes with modern rims and tires.

IMO panaracer/mavic is a bad combo.

I've always struggled to get the bead set with it. inflate, deflate, pry, inflate, pry some more. add soap to bead, over inflate....
^ it really makes a guy think about changing a flat along side the road with that kind of a headache.

then again my WTB mtb tires don't like mavic wheels either. However, a wrap of gorilla tape and going tubeless helped heaps. I can actually get both beads down in the valley. it mounts by hand and pops right into place with a floor pump now.

I had a problem with WTB Riddlers not mounting straight and being a little wonky. The max PSI recommended for the tire is 55 but I had to pump it up to 70 PSI to get the bead to set evenly around the rim. Once it had set, I lowered the pressure down to 40 and the tires worked great.

Don't ever get the GP5000 tubeless. they are much, much harder to mount. Smaller diameter on the bead, stiffer bead, much thicker bead.

It is because of tubless. There are no "standards" so to keep from getting sued or reviews of blowoffs, wheels tend to be made with a larger diameter, and tires with a smaller diameter, sometimes with a stiffer bead.

make sure you get the bead in the center channel.

Also, I've just given up after mounting tires by hand for decades, and I bought kookstop tire bead jack. It helps.

That and casing failures. I installed a 650x42b PariMoto (with my bare hands, thanks) on my bike and just inflating it to 50 psi was enough to cause the casing to fail. Grrrr....

I always needed levers for my 4000sii on my Mavic wheels.

I just installed gp5000 regulars on my Caonnondale stans hollowgram wheels with no levers. I almost was ready to go tubeless, but I wasn't going to wait on the 28c tubeless tires. ( side note: the 28c gp5000 are a dream ride on the supersix!!!)

I'm so jealous you can fit 28s on your SuperSix. On Hollowgram wheels no less! Gah

disc brake helps. as does the GP5000 being truer to size. Fresh install was measuring 28.2 - 28.5 I didn't recheck after a ride.

the 25C stock schwalbe 1 one were 215g with a kendra 23/25 tube 330g measured 27

the 28c gp5000 336g with a conti race light tube 77g for 313. measuring 28.ish

was it worth the money for 1.5 mm? Absolutely!!!!!!! the ride quality and RR difference is black/white

Buy a bag of polyurethane gloves and wear them when putting the tire on. Gives you more grip and protects your skin.
