Brake Pad Replacement - Tektro R317

Hi Guys,

I am looking for replacement pads for the Tektro R317 long reach dual-pivot caliper brakes on my Jamis Satellite Comp. Will any "cartridge" pad work?

Thanks Shepp30

Are your stock pads cartridge-style, with holders and inserts? Bob's Kool-Stop pic above shows a cartridge-style pad. Remove the lock screw and the pad slides out of the holder. If you have cartridge-style pads, common Shimano-compatible road brake inserts should fit a Tektro holder. Kool-Stop Dura or Dura2 inserts are a popular option, particularly their salmon-colored compound.

If you have one-piece brake blocks instead of cartridge-style ones, you'll need to replace each pad in its entirety. You can select new one-piece pads like Shimano Sora/Tiagra pads, or you can buy cartridge holders with pads.

Thanks guys, correct my stock pads are cartridge-style. They all look to be about the same dimensions on-line, I wasn't sure if I could just order any pad,
listed as a cartridge pad.

Any Shimano compatible road pad, for instance KoolStop's Dura Type pads: Kool Stop International - High Performance Bicycle Brake Pads Since 1977

Any pad inserts made to fit Shimano's current road brake holders should work. That's probably a pretty big majority of road bike pads out there, but there are pads that won't fit your holders. Stay away from pad inserts designed for Campagnolo brakes, for example.

If you are going to the trouble to order, I would encourage you to get the Koolstops, salmon, black or mixed, all are good. They only cost a few dollars more than the cheapest available. If you've been using stock Tektro pads, you'll be in for a nice surprise. Tektro brakes are fine but their pads suck.
