Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Funny...before I read this I was looking at the pictures and thinking, "positions seem familiar, but definitely different from today. Look at the bike geometries, etc....but you know what....I'll bet if you popped them out of the pictures and lined them up in an event today on those rigs in that shape and at that age that the results would basically be the same."

Oh, Rebecca Twigg!! Men of a certain age know what I mean!! I've got some photos from a race in Ft Worth TX (1984 ?), the Beatrice Bicycle Classic. The 7-11 men's and women's teams were there, the famous Specialized/SunTour station wagon, with it's rear bumper almost scraping the ground. A photo of who I think is Eddie B.?

I remember I got shelled out the back of the 3s pack on the 2nd pass in the Iron Horse Classic, and the pro women caught me. First was a small break with Inga and Rebecca. I dug deep and was able to hold them for about 30 seconds. It was worth it. After that I blew up so bad that I had to hitch a ride back to Durango to get ready for the MTB race the next day (which went much better, and Missy Giove crashed in front of me when I was spectating).

biggest difference: clipless pedals, and the aforementioned STI technology.

Yeah, I think STI was the last technological advancement that really felt like it made me faster.

Mike had a habit of "out of the gun" from the start in all the Junior races.

I had to ride into Manhattan to race. My memory on names suck, I kinda know everyone by bike. Such as there was only 1 guy on CRC that rode a 3Rensho (and he was Japanese).

Did you know Greg Ayala?

Most of my racing in the NYC area was at Old Westbury and Central Park. Otherwise I was racing upstate (where I went to college), NJ, and New England.

I race a lot of the CBR BAR races in SoCal and some of the SCNCA SoCal Cup races but I'm not an overall contender.

Unfortunately, that's the closet I got to the bikes. I'll check tonight and see if I have anymore of the team and the bike.

I wish I had the foresight back then to take pictures of all the bikes I had or seen.

I can't even remember some of the bikes I used to ride.

The Centurions I saw the women's team ride in the 86 Coors were the aluminum Facet frames in yellow. I don't recall what components were on them. I've got a photo somewhere of Madonna Harris winning the Vail-Copper Mountain stage on one of the yellow frames, but I'm sure it's a several hour search to find it.

No, sorry. That was ringer. But you jarred some memories. I remember Glenn as well! That's Tom Donohue. He was a good buddy of mine.

Haha, I heard so many good McCormack brother stories. They must be great to hang out in a bar.
I had a couple of incidents with inspectors. One for a loose stem and one for a missing bar plug.

Sady, not that much. I was on the bike most of the time.
But what inspired me was these. I remember them like yesterday. Great pix of t-bah and Tommy D, Eric Zaltas, Hewitt Thayer and many many more that you will remember.

Donahue, Tanner, Zaltas etc were my teammates back then. Those guys were pretty good.

What a great era to follow the sport. The rise of Lemond and the 7-11 team was electric.
Does anyone remember the Panasonic / Shimano team from around 1981? Those guys came to my home town and it was the first pro team I actually met in person. Fun fun times!
