The QT is evil so I took...
After riding for about an hour, I stopped off at the QT (Quick Trip) for some beer. I don't have a lock for my new bike yet, so I tried to bring it in. (Not that it matters, since they are one of the few places that doesn't have racks.) A cashier immediately confronted me, saying, "You can't bring that in here. It's a fire hazard." (Interesting how each place has a different reason.)
So I said, "Well, then, I'll go buy my beer at Circle K, because they don't have a problem with it."
Sure enough, the Circle K guy had nothing to say with the bike. As I was leaving, I said, "Thanks for not having a problem with the bike in the store."
He said, "Oh, why should I care?"
I said, "Well, the QT wouldn't let me do it."
He said, "Oh, well. They're jerks."
Honestly, I have no idea if this a corporate policy, a local thing, a picky manager, or the result of a bad encounter with the Fire Marshall. So I don't really know if they are "evil" or not. Either way, the QT acted "evil," so I took...my business elsewhere.

haha funny story.
Similar thing happened to me, though not related to bikes. At uni we're not allowed to sit on the steps if the lecture room is full because its a "fire hazard". Its understandable though, i guess they have specific standards for evacuations and if something was in the way then yeh.. trouble.
Hope you weren't drink riding
lol

Check the code. Probably is a fire evacuation hazard. Cyclists are often too pushy with their machines. If you can't lock it outside, don't bring it. Seriously. I bring my bikes into my shop, but I wouldn't let a stranger do that.

I'm tempted to roll my 1989 Cannondale in REI since they don't have a rack and I would need a 10foot cable to lock it to the piling supporting the front of the store (and I don't have one). They have a LED safety vest I am intersted in. Course they repair bikes so it may not be an issue.

I asked the manager of our local grocery store if and when they might install a bike rack to accomodate the bicycles out front.
His reply - bring it inside behind the customer service area, and we will keep an eye on it!
I thanked him, and said with customer service like that, they don''t need a rack!!!!
Works for me!

Man, how in the hell, in all of god's creation, can your bike be a fire hazard??
That astounds me. Its so damn idiotic and absurd that it made me tilt my head up and bark out a laugh.

A bike is no more a fire evacuation hazard than a shopping cart (especially those shaped like cars and the such for children), wheel chair, stroller, walker, hand truck, pallet jack, or any number of wheeled items you can find in a store. If you don't let someone wheel their bike, especially if there is no lock outside, into your store because you think cyclists are "too pushy" then you had better not stop being ubercautious and ban shopping carts as well.

You think they're everywhere there, try Tulsa (Corporate HQ is here, after all). And they just might be evil.
Recently, the City of Tulsa saw fit to eminent domain the old Camelot hotel. The owner of record was some Transendalist maharishi type from CA, who was not interested in fixing up the old hotel. So the City took control in the "best interests of the public" and also of the "soon to begin" widening of I-44. QT now owns the land the hotel was once on. And Church's Chicken is still sitting on that same corner...
And as for the "fire hazard"? Point out Bubba on Pump 7 topping off the tanks on a trailerload of atv's while smoking...

Yeah, I know. That's why I wasn't all that hot-headed about it. But, faced with that particular dilemma at that moment, taking my business elsewhere seemed like the best solution. Circle K has allowed me to roll my bike in on several occasions, so I went there.
Truthfully, I think it's kind of a silly policy, but I will probably still go back to the QT because they have their act together in so many other ways. Their cashiers are the fasted I have ever seen. They always have at least two people working the store (for safety of the cashiers, as well as for quick service). Every time I enter one, I am greeted by one of the cashiers. They are trained to do this. (Why do you think the guy caught my bike so quickly? ) The place always looks sparkling clean. Plus, they stock a lot of newspapers, so I can always go over late in the day and get one.
