Recommendations for "obsolete" GPS/HR unit?
Garmin no longer supports my Edge 305 cyclometer/HRM, and my updated computers don't recognize it as a plug-in device, so the web-based Garmin Connect is not an option for storing/analyzing data. Any options, other than buying new? The unit works just fine.

My edge 305 was never supported since I use Linux.
The workaround was to connect it as usb storage, then copy the files to the computer just like from a normal usb. I think you can do this on windows too.
Then I would import the files into strava or Garmin connect website.
Currently, I use a 510, which still seems to be supported by Garmin connect on windows. It's considered a legacy device now, so probably cheap if you find one with a good battery.

If it were me, I'd get in contact with Garmin (they have a chat function on their website). They have pretty good customer service, and might upgrade you for a very low price, or even FREE! I have (or I should say HAD) a Garmin Forerunner 10. It got to the point where it just would not synchronize with the satellites. So I contacted them and they initiated a service request for me...sent me a free shipping label via email. Once they received the device, they contacted me and said that it could not be repaired. And, they did not have any Forerunner 10s, new or refurbished, in stock to send to me. BUT, they were authorized to upgrade me to a Forerunner 25 at no charge to me...NEW OUT OF THE BOX. I accepted. If you do decide to try that route...I suggest that before you do, register the device on their website...even if it is discontinued and out of warranty, and no longer "supported"...they might still have software updates for it that might restore it...they will probably ask you about that. And they'll also want to know the device's part and serial numbers. -- Dan

I hope you have a script to detect when you plug it in and do this automatically for you.
