These bikes we are seeing broken to bits didn't assplode, they broke in wrecks. Any ultralight frame would be significantly damaged by the same wreck, but it might not look as dramatic a a CF failure.

What about heavy carbon frames, like 1.2kg?
Tough as buggery. Got an old Tarmac with a bit of slight impact damage above the FD, still going strong after years. I'll take a pound of carbon over a pound of anything less expensive. More expensive, I'd sell it and buy carbon.

The Madone seems an odd choice for you, though it looks very nice. For the disc version, the lowest component level appears to be Ultegra and I'm pretty sure I recall from another recent thread that you had compared and decided Ultegra and DA provided no functional benefit. Nevertheless, New Bike Day is always fun, be sure to post pics and initial impressions

Not really an odd choice my first bike was a madone with full dura ace 7800 group brand new actually. If you read the thread though I did state carbon bike with full Ultegra disc. Obviously I'd prefer 6-4 Ti with disc, but we are talking well over 4k when a new trek madone is only $1900 closeout with full Ultegra disc.
They certainly cost a lot more here in NZ.

Moving forward, the interesting question is how long before the Madone is replaced by another bike? What reasons will be given? The OP has been chastised heavily, but the same can be be said for anyone that has purchased a new bike in the last 2 years. What's going to be the reason for the new bike a few years down the line? Another gear or two? A frame that's 1/4lb lighter? Whatever it is people will be able to rationalize it just like the OP did. Heck, I'm guessing that some of the ones doing the hardest chastising have already got that new steed in mind. They just haven't talked themselves into it yet. That is the way it goes. That's what keeps the industry humming along.

I have an '03 vortex that I bought new in 04, it cost an arm and a leg.It replaced a sweet ritchey logic that weighed a couple
of pounds more.
It's a sweet riding bike but has limitations.
I can break any bike and have broken aluminum mtbs in the past.
The litespeed broke under the head tube and lite speed replaced the head tube for $500 .
What you don't see in the article about racing litespeeds in the tour and classics is that every single rider complained
the bikes were a noodle.

I find this statement surprising. Because one, not many riders ever rode Ti in the tour. Lance won a time trial on a Litespeed frame that was rebranded Trek in 1999 from what I read. I think Mcewan won stage 17 and rode an off the shelf 03 vortex to win it all. He won the green jersey that year. I highly doubt that frame rode like a noodle as the vortex, from my experience is very stiff. I can't however speak to the 03 model. The 03 model does look similar to the 05 with the diamond shaped top tube/down tube.

In fact I'm not sure that is an 03 vortex from this article. I thought it was the 05 that had the bladed chain stays.

Glad I am not part of that process. My Engin replaced a 10 Y.O. steel IF that was rusting around the head tube and never quite fit me right. I only bought the IF because the Colnago DreamPlus I had bought 3+ years before cracked after the warranty had expired.
Aside from the two LHT's I bought in '08 and '11 (the first one was stolen near the end of '10), that's been it for my bike buying, and I am not eyeing anything else.

Suppose to pick up the Madone but questioning if disc brakes are worth it and just live with inferior rim brake performance in wet conditions. It’s always foggy in sf though year round it seems

I put a deposit down. Obviously I could still back out. It all depends on how this thread goes and if there is a compelling argument to keep the Ti with rim brakes.
