Info on this Trek 7.2 commuter
I have been out of cycling for a while and have been looking to getting back into commuting.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me about this exact bike shown in the photograph.
What year is it? Is it definitely a men's specific design?
And more importantly of all is it appropriate for a 20-plus mile commute?

It would depend on the rider, but the bike looks like a great starting point for a commuter bike. Add lights/rack/bags etc... as needed/desired.

It's a good bike! It's nice that it already has fenders. And it's a really good do-everything bike, hybrids always are. It has all the mounting holes for racks front and rear, fenders and kid seats. It also has low gears, if you're just starting out low on fitness, or to tow a trailer, or take lots of cargo up a hill.
Only thing to look out for really is rear wheel spoke failures after a few thousand miles, esp if you're heavy. But that's true of any bike in this price range, they just don't do a good job at the factory. And that's not catastrophic, just annoying.
But, 20 miles round trip or one way? 20 round trip is probably ok, but 40 miles round trip, you'll see the people on this forum who do extra-long commutes settle on drop bar road bikes.
