Which Shoe Do You Recommend?
I've been wearing Sidi shoes for a very long time -- both road and MTB. They fit my foot well. But my Genius 5 shoes have around 12,000 miles on them and they are starting to fit a little funny in places. It may be time for a replacement.
I realize that you can spend however much you want to spend when it comes to cycling shoes. That doesn't mean I want to spend a lot. And bling for bling's sake is a major turn-off. Fit and performance are of paramount importance. I seem to get a better fit out of shoes with separate closures for the front, mid and tongue area of the shoe (Genius 5 is Velcro, Velcro, ratcheting buckle).
What brand / model cycling shoe would you recommend? And, more to the point, why do you recommend them?

Pardon me for answering a question that wasn't asked ... but have you tried footbed inserts in your cycling shoes? They are fairly inexpensive, and can be moved from one shoe to the next, as they don't wear much. They made a significant difference for me.
BTW: I have tried Sidi, Lake, and Giro shoes. They were all about the same in terms of fit for me.

Haven't tried them. Haven't needed them. Until these shoes started wearing out, they've were perfectly comfortable.

Recently started wearing Fizik R5B road shoes based on my liking their saddles. Has been a excellent pair of shoes for fit and comfort. No hot spots, fairly stiff and not to hard to walk in with Look Grip cleats. Have worn Pearl Izumi previously and Mavic before that. Again, most comfortable shoe yet. And fairly low key on the colors. Choose gray with celeste type accents, which is technically a women's model.

If you wear a size 48 I have a pair of 2012 Specialized Carbon S Works that I never use, and will sell them relatively cheap. They are not as comfortable as the Sidi Genius model they were meant to replace, so I still use the old Sidis.

As an old school toeclips-and-straps holdout, I have been pleased with my new Giro Rumble shoes, which seem so far to provide that sweet spot compromise between walkability and protection of the feet against pedal hot spots. I did have to switch to size L toeclips on the UO-8 to allow me to put the ball of the foot over the shaft of the pedal.

I have found one brand of shoes fit my feet better than others. My wife like another brand. You may find that some brands fit you better than others. Also the same size may not fit the same between brands. So what you need to do is to find a few shops that sell different brands, and try them on. Try as many different brands as you can. Pick the one you like best.

12,000 miles? I have a pair of Shimano road shoes with at least 60,000 miles of riding. They look like crap but still work.

My work Wolverine steel toe tennis shoes for me, LOL.
I wear a 4E width. I couldn't get my feet into a pair of cycling shoes if I covered my feet in hot butter and used a hydraulic press to get them in.

I wear a 10.5 B , but D gives me more toe room..
I dont suit up in my fancy bike gear much any more..
Have a pair of discontinued Sidi Touring Shoes And a Good as New Carnac Carlit.. Also No longer madre.
There is an Italian made pair of MTB Shoes Nike got made somewhere around here ..
they're probably 20 years old.
I agree on insoles .. I like the 3/4 Birkenstock cork composite types, myself ,, another old hoarde.
