Convince me why I need a Colnago Master

The “man in the boat” comment is funny.

I've had five Colnago Masters over the years, they ride great but so does my De Rosa and my Tommasini and my Parmount and my Merckx, etc. I love the paint jobs, I had one of the Mapei ones and there must be more than 30 different colours on the frame, it is really nice.
One nice thing about Masters is that they hold their value really well so, if you get tired of it, you can probably sell it for what you paid.
I still have two but neither are built up right now, one a first generation model from 1983 and the other a Mapei from around 1998.

Re: selling, if I ever decide to sell mine it would be easier to sell it as a frameset&fork than as a complete bike. When I was between jobs and talking to people about it the potential buyers wanted a discount because they didn’t want 8-speed. Works fine for me though.

Glad you bought one. There was an auction here from a storage unit that had 5 Colnago frames, all NOS. The most expensive one went for $405. I just didn't find out in time to do anything about it.
If you were still on the fence, I considered sending you a threatening letter to "buy or else..." so at least you'd be justified. You know, to help. Just sayin'
PS: it's also cheaper than an MG.

To the OP, you're in SoCal. If you're close to SFV and can ride a size 56, you're welcome to try mine.

Hey camel nice one. The frame has arrived. Crank and FD from the parts bin. Waiting for the rest of the bits to arrive and deciding on wheels. I think it needs shiny silver parts all around.

Very nice! I think one of these built with ~modern Campagnolo (or any other number of builds) would be a lot of fun. Looking forward to seeing it come together and reading your impressions.

Interesting info. Not disagreeing with you as I've just found a number of websites with newer info on the Technos frames.
I did several years of research on the frame 10-12 years ago and came up with the 1988 date from a number of sources. Frame builder Ed Litton who I bought it from recollected that he worked on it and then took it on a trade in the early 90's.
I built frames back in the 70's and both Ed and I think that the top and down tubes have a 0.3mm wall thickness midsection. You can squeeze them a little bit. I did find BITD that Columbus increased the wall thickness in the thin sections of the frame tubes for the Technos tubing (just like they did with the seat stays and chain stays on Columbus SL tubing). That's why I think that I have an early version Technos.
Date doesn't affect my opinion of the frame.

After 2000 Colnago changed to a custom tubeset and the model name changed to Tecnos 2000
You may actually have a 1996 model according to the catalog from that year.

Thanks guys. After reading this I now need to add a Collage to the bunch. My wife is going to kill me.

A Collage can be built with a few dollars worth of supplies. Your wife probably won't mind. However a nice Colnago might get her bent out of shape. If she finds out about it.

Darn spell check. As surmised it's the latter. She'll notice another bike hanging from the ceiling in the garage. She's good at that kind of thing.

Beautiful frame!
I don’t know how far back the Colnago archive goes but I sent a nice email to the main email (Italy) and they sent a nice email back with year, paint code and size of frame. I provided the model and serial number on the frame. I had to wait a whole day for their response! If you count it as sent out in the afternoon from Michigan a 6hr time difference to Italy and her response the following day... (trying for sarcasm) her response was awesomely quick!

Shifters and RD arrived so they go on with the parts bin stuff. Brakes come next week. Not sure what goes on after that. A seat post, a proper stem and decent handlebars.

Never ridden one but have always lusted after one, those straight chrome forks look so good and the pain jobs are just amazing. I'm sure any buyers won't regret it. I think if I owed one my main worry would be keeping the amazing paint in as good a condition as possible. I bet owners wince and whelp at any knock the frame gets.
