Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheaper than my old: hobby R/C cars

A good race able r/c car: ~$1000
Nitro fuel: $30 per gallon
Battery pack: $30
Charger: $100
Extra parts: $200-$300

Total I spent over three years: About $3500

My dad's happy that I am into cycling now.

Once you buy the bike, it's as cheap or expensive as you want to make it. Do you really need the sport beans and the CO2? Really?

This has the makings of one of those MasterCard commercials which always end with "priceless".

Try racing real cars. That makes just about every other interest feel cheap. Unless you're doing this...

I just emptied my bank account of about $9K on a dream bike.

Did I need it? Not really, no faster or more mystical than the Cervelo S1 I bang about on 99% of the time.

Do you really need CO2 cylinders and sport beans? Or are just convenient to you - cause if that's the case, convenience ain't free.

(hopefully) you aren't spending money on new tubes and CO2 all that often.... so how expensive is it really when you consider how long between spending that money each time?

A guy I ride with also plays golf. It cost him $500 a year to join a club and $75.00 every time he plays. Running would be cheaper but than cycling but my knees hate running.

bow hunting, another potentially extremely expensive hobby... i'd call car racing a sport more so than a hobby... but there are plenty of really expensive sports... how about snowmobiling?? I know plenty of guys that drop $12k about every other year on a new sled (sometimes a few sleds if their families are involved as well), a 4x4 vehicle to tow the $3k trailer (if you only have 1-2 sleds, up to $10k for a big trailer)... and most of these guys only go riding about 3 weekends per winter, drive 800 miles with the truck/trailer, sleds that only get 8mpg... from a $/mile stand point its one of the most expensive i've participated in... including roadracing motorcycles...

Now that I think about it last time was around August when I bought tubes. However they used to be 2.99 now they were 5.99$

And no I don't need sport beans and co2 but I don't want to carry a pump and like the sugar rush from the beans.
I was a taken back by the price on this relatively 'inexpensive' items.

Hobbies in general always get expensive. I'm into modding cars and photography so both can get expensive. Granted i haven't bought photography equipment in awhile and haven't modded my car either due to cycling taking a lot of my funds.

How about a pump and a couple of patches?
And you're probably too fat to be eating sportbeans.

Awesome, good for you!

I've got my current bike on ebay with the bid at $800, and once that sale is final, I'm going to be picking up a bike for a total of about $3500. I'm definitely excited.

And yeah, it's not cheap, but if you can legitimately afford it and it makes you happy, that's what matters.

That seriously is insane. My local two mountains (Silver Mt and Schweitzer MT , in North Idaho) are now pushing $60 per ticket, and I thought that was bad.

It depends.

Riding fixies as a sport is pretty cheap.

Racing road bikes in organized races gets pretty expensive.

Most of the guys i work with are into the car clubs either the corvette club or the porsche club and if not that have a Harly davidson. I admire all these vehicles and their attributes...but i know they have sunk in a lot $ more than my cycling hobby...and for some the bypass has been included. i always remind my wife when she complains about a box arriving from some online bike retailer that I could join the guys at the corvette club...just need about $30k to $50k depending on what I get. But its your money and maybe its a bass boat, sailboat, snowmobile, golf, dirt bike, hunting....you pick your poison to invest in.
