Gash on tire, what to do?
I have a nasty side wall cut. On my last ride I ran over a rock and just noticed cut today. My plan is to 'patch' with a piece from old tube, so I can ride after work.
Will my idea work, I'll hate to be stranded.

You could boot it with a piece of old tire, not tube as it's too stretchy but being on the sidewall it's iffy as the sidewall is the weakest part of any tire, bike or car. If you get a new tire, now you'll have lots of boot material.

Depending on what you call a 'gash.'
Is the gash all the way through the sidewall of the tire?
More than 1/4 inch long?
Gashes can be temporarily fixed with a tire boot (piece of old tire, tyvek, heavy nylon or even a folded $ bill).
Note the word "temporarily" . . .
