Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd say sora or tiagra.

I've owned (3) sets (came on the bikes) and I'd say busted sora or tiagra.

so lower level

I'll probably replace em with 105's once they wear out since I'm not please with the sluggish shifting which is apparently pretty common

Yeah - they work; just make sure you torque the bolts down before each ride. I use the spare left crank arms as hammers sometimes.

I think I had an Omega or a Gossamer. It was pure crap. Get a nice crank, you can feel the difference.

I just upgraded from a Gossamer crank to Ultegra SL and I instantly noticed an improvement in shifting.

I use a Gossamer and havent had any problems. I haven't used anything else though besides a Zipp 300 that didn't work out for me. Its a mid level FSA crank, probably compares to a 105 Shimano, weight wise anyway.

Like with everything else in cycling you don't know what you didn't have until you have better. That's why I refuse to test ride really high-end bikes.

Yes, lower level. IMO, FSA Gossamer is built more to meet a price point than to perform well.

I'd say Gossamers are along the line of 105's. We have them on our tandem. (there is a very limited selection of Tandem cranks.) Other than a tendancy to creak, like every other FSA crank I've had, thy're not bad. They don't shiuft as well as D/A.

And as for not knowing what you don't have. I currently have bikes with Dura Ace, Ultegra, FSA K Force, FSA SLK, FSA team issue, and Campagnolo cranks.

Got the Gossamer on my new Bianchi and seems pretty nice to me. Previously I was riding on a 15 year old 105 so maybe I don't know what I'm missing but I don't want to spend a bunch of money right now so the Gossamer will do.

I've been riding a Gossamer triple (don't say anything) for two full seasons. Very noisy crank. I don't have much to compare it with though. Have ridden poorly tuned DA once. I can't decide if I should upgrade the crank or just wait until I get a new bike. But I definitely DO want to upgrade the crank. OK, it's a BD bike, so I'm unlikely to upgrade...problem solved.
