Do you name your bikes?

Ok - odd question I know, but:

When entering my gear into Strava today it asked me for a name for my bike. It never occurred to me to give it a name. So I am asking 3 questions:
1. Do you name your bike(s)?
2. If you do, what is/are the name(s)?
3. Any suggestions for what I should name mine?

It must be a female name because, well.....I only ride females .

My bikes are named Roubaix (Roo'-bay) and Gran Turismo.
I think the Gran Turismo is jealous of the Roubaix and so added the superlative "Gran" to compensate.

Sometimes I refer to my bikes by the name of the city of original purchase (Appleton, Ketchum, and Seattleite). I seldom if ever refer to them by name though...

Err ... Isn't it likely that Strava was just asking for the model name of the bike, such as Specialized Roubaix?

Here is what I call my bikes: My Bob Jackson World Tour is the Bob Jackson, my Waterford RST-22 is the Waterford, my Ritchey cyclecross is the Ritchey, my De Bernardi is the De Bernardi, and my Soma Saga is the Soma Saga. Not very creative perhaps, but simple.

Wow - your bike has a Facebook page. Now that is taking the rule about it being 'all about the bike' a bit far. But nice work.

Well I guess I will not be too embarrassed to give my ride a sweet little name.

It's just social fun. My bike makes fun of me a bunch and my family and friends get a kick out of it.

I am with you. All my bikes came pre-named by the manufacturer/builder, although "Independent Fabrication" is a mouthful so I simply call it the "IF," and I shorten the "Bike Friday" to the "Friday." When the Engin is finished in March, I will call it the "Engin."

Actually no. That was my immediate thought but the first line was NAME:_____. Then down the list was Brand and Model and other info. So it was specifically asking for a name.

My wifes Mustang is the "California Special Edition" Convertible. We call her Cali.

But no I don't think I've named anything else. Hmm, I am intrigued though. What I might name by bike.

I have three bikes with names. I was riding my moniker, the Peter Mooney, and suddenly realized that the bike's name was Pete. Not Peter like the builder, my brother or my uncle. Just Pete. Years later (and several bikes) i heard a woman give a talk of her life's story, esp of expecting to be found some morning in a dumpster and realized that the bike I had put together from a frame saved from a dumpster shared her name, Jessica. The bike that bike inspired, the custom ti fixie, has been Jessica J (my initial) since its inception.

If I try to name a bike, I forget what that name is. The names that have come from elsewhere have stuck.

Ben

This is perhaps the best advice. For now the name of the bike in Strava is TBD. We will see what comes over time.

My daughter has named her bikes: the Townie is Peaches, the old Trek is Ms. Grape, the new Trek with the bigger wheels is Blue Lightning. Anyone who borrows one of her bikes has to be willing to call it by name or they can't borrow it.

I try to let the name come organically. My 8.4 ds is The snow trooper as I bought it in early spring when snow was still hanging around. I got a fatbike for christmas and changed the handlebar out for a wider one with new grips and bar ends which made it look like a moose's antlers. "The Moose" it became. My sectuer road bike has no name yet. I haven't got the cockpit sorted yet so I don't ride it much. In time the name will come.

My old 10-speed "Rusty" Schwinn Super LeTour gave my newish Specialized Ruby Pro her name "Rhubarb" as her gang name for RAGBRAI several years ago. Rhubarb is a pretty deep red and has kind of a tart personality. It's a nice homage to my Iowa origins.
Rhubarb helped name my black and white Giant Avail backup bike "Lucy", short for Lucifer, the black and white cat in Cinderella. Lucy is supposed to be sitting in a bike trainer, and she is a harsh ride.

The car has the same name as its predecessor: "Honda".
I have also named several of the household appliances:
Sloshy, the washing machine
Thumper Sock-Eater, the clothes dryer
Jack the Ripper, the paper shredder

Doesn't everybody do this?

Bike names are very personal. The perfect name sometimes just pops into your head by itself.

So "Slow and Fat" is probably the best way to describe me on a bike. In Italian, that's "Lento e grasso". To effemenize Lento might be to make it "Lenta", maybe drop the "T" and get "Lena". Re-stylize "Leena", drop the "e", and anglicize (as opposed to transliterate) "grasso" into "Grace", which has a bit of a double meaning for me there. And further re-stylize it to make it more catchy (and fit the bikes color);

I present, the name for my bike: The Leena Gray or perhaps just Leena Gray

Unsure if "the", as in a ship or plane (The Titanic, The Enola Gay), is better; or dropping the "the".

If I wanted a more masculine name; maybe Lenny Gray.
