Detroit new velodrome to host National championships!

More good news for cycling in Detroit. Now we really have to build the thing!
The to-be-built indoor cycling velodrome at Detroit's Tolan Playfield will host USA Cycling men's and women's U.S. National Track Championships in 2017 and 2018.

The three days of cycling are scheduled for Oct. 19-21 {2017**. Next year's dates have not yet been set, said Dale Hughes, the velodrome's developer and organizer of the nonprofit Detroit Fitness Foundation that's working in collaboration with the city to create the privately-funded $4 million multisport building.

Ticket prices for the championships have not yet been set. The facility will have just under 1,000 seats, and Hughes said most of the audience will come from livestreaming.

The races are what is known as a madison tournament, which is two-rider relay team in a field of 20 to 30 teams.

Will it be ready?

Got some news on the velodromes construction.
They just started. How long does it take to build ?
I can't see it being ready for use in four months.
This was the progress two days ago.

Its on schedule. Construction started in June and it will be ready in the fall.

But yeah, not a lot of "slack" time. The track itself can be built in about a week.

It seems strange that any national organization would schedule a major event at an untested venue.

Exactly. For the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics, they just had test events at most if not all the venues. The down-hill ski venue is weird, it's not at a existing ski resort. It's purpose built race course with no local accommodations.

How is the construction going for the new Detroit velodrome? The ATRA website (ATRA: American Track Racing Association) seems to indicate the National Madison races will be held at Bloomer Park.

The building is up and the actual track construction starts September 1st. Its getting close. I'm thinking Dale is really going to want to showcase the new track, not the old one in Bloomer. We are having a "construction" party next week but I'm out of town. Doh!

missing a picture?

Its aired up now. Maybe that was what you were posting...

It's not going to be ready by the championships in October (will have to use IVBP I'm guessing), but after the fiasco with the land by eastern market (old Joe Muer's site), this is good to see.

They've announced the new opening for January 2018. Lexus signed on as corporate sponsor.

Yeah, front page article in the paper! Its taken so long for this to come to fruition. It was originally going to be by the Dequindre Cut (near eastern market), but this site will probably work better for the long run.

I'm thinking of riding both of the City's velodromes this weekend. Some laps indoors at Lexus, and then the race outdoors at Dorias.
