Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Enve 2.2 clincher rim QC question

I just took delivery of used enve 2.2 clincher wheels from a seller on ebay.

Noted the inner edge of the bead hook is uneven, there are many bumps and ledges that catch the finger. I measured the inner width between the bead hooks at 18.6mm, and after a ledge 19.4. Yes, the bead hook itself thins out almost a mm

There are multiple irregularities on both rims. I have not tried to mount tires but I would be less than confident these hooks will hold tubeless properly. I received them with non tubeless strips so don't know if prior owner used them tubeless.

Anyone seen such a thing?

One of the larger irregularities in the bead hook

I'd return them.

That doesn't look like a bicycle rim. It's not even a rim-shaped object, since if it were rim-shaped, it wouldn't be so lumpy. It's a big blob claiming to be a bicycle rim.

I'd look into returning them.

I don't even know how that would happen? Looks like it was probably a manufacturing defect? I wouldn't want to pay for them and I wouldn't want to corner on them.

I submitted a request to ebay to return these for refund. I noted some damage to brake tracks and outside edge also

I didn't even try to mount tires in these, the bumps inside the bead hook could damage sidewalls, and I would not trust these tubeless.
Looks like a little valley forming between brake track and the rest of the bead hook, I could get my fingernails inside gap. Yikes

Fortunately for you, PayPal always sides with the buyer.

If they actually are ENVE rims and not fakes, I do wonder how/why the original owner didn't notice the flaws in the clinchers.

Brings to mind the recent prohibition by Enve against using their rims with Vittoria Corsa.

Different model rims are referenced but I wonder if it is the same issue.

Things that make you go hmmm...
