Tips for riding Windsor, Ontario?

Hi, all. I live in Detroit and renewed my passport so I can ride Windsor now. I looked on the city's map and saw non-car paths circle about two-thirds of the city.

Any general tips for riding Windsor?

Any recommendations on particular stops (food, drink, local history, bike-related shopping etc.)?

Thanks

Some highlights in Windsor ONT

Any of these places are good!

I've found that the drivers in Canada are generally much more polite than in the states.

Thanks, detroitjim. I don't think the dancing ladies are going to want to get near my grimy, smelly self after a ride. But they'd probably be polite about it.

The first ride, maybe next Friday, I'm going to put the mtb-shaped object on the tunnel bus, ride the riverfront and do a little exploring.

I did it - nice ride for the most part.

burn off some calories and stop in little Italy to replenish the tank:

Thanks, Chas58. Just what I was looking for. Easy to get to, too. Not sure about Friday but soon.

Here is a heat map from Strava, from back when Strava was new.

It looks a little different now...

but heat maps are a good idea on where to get routes.

Thanks again, Chas. The city of Windsor has a decent trail map. Basically, it's gone east since your map. It goes about two thirds of the way around the city, breaking down near the airport.

I'm going to ride up and down the riverfront and then take Parent to Erie and see how many pizza slices I can slide down my gullet.

I'll post a pic or two here and a brief rundown of my ride when I do.

Will Google maps work on my phone there since Canada is long distance for me?

Thanks again.

.

No. Not without "overseas" roaming charges. good point.

Usually I just browse the route before riding, and it stays in the memory - if I don't turn the phone off.

Much better way is to download the google map to your phone for offline usage. That way there are no surprises.

Might also be a good idea to make sure your phone won't try to download things when roaming.

Good idea, Chas. Thanks. I printed the map from the Windsor website and that should be fine. If I get lost I'll just ride north till I see the river. Or ask one of those polite Canadians to point the way.

With up to nine inches of snow today, looks like Friday is out. Maybe next week.

I've run the riverfront in recent years, not biked (when I lived over there in '90-91 I didn't have a car and a bike with baskets was my transport)... but as an american there are spots on the riverfront you can get phone signal from the states.. just turn off the roaming option and see what happens.. I was shocked when my phone rang the first time.. the furher inland less likely it is to happen.

Have fun!

Cool. Nothing to lose. I'm planning on next Friday now. I'm going to ride from park to park along the riverfront and hit Little Italy.

TMobile has an agreement with Rogers Communications in Canada. Huron Church Road has an elaborate pedestrian overpass, with gardening.
