Two Different Size Wheels On Bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Two Different Size Wheels On Bike

I am in the market for my first real road bike and on the used market and I came across a BMC Granfondo gf02 Disc for ask $900 CAD. It seems like it is in great shape however, I was a little confused about the wheels. The owner says that he is running Continental Ultra Sport 23x622 in the front and Vittoria Rubino Pro Endurance 25x622 in the back. They are the same size, the only difference is the thickness (2c). Is this bad? I've never seen anyone running two different size wheels on road bikes at least.

Thanks,
voz

Its no biggie, lots of folks reckon it's a good idea.

But wheels aren't tyres. You're talking about tyres.

There's more weight on the rear wheel of a bike than the front so you can generally run a narrower tyre at a lower pressure on the front than you can at the rear. They may have put the wider tyre on the rear to provide more comfort or buffer if they were getting regular pinch flats.

With a bigger tire on the rear, you come away with the really cool feeling that you're always riding downhill.

You beat me to the joke - years ago I convinced a guy to go on a bike tour with me and he was very nervous about biking up hill. I told him he could put a 26" in wheel on the front and then the hills would seem level and the level would seem downhill - since he was an engineer, I thought he knew I was kidding. But, never underestimate the common sense of an electronic engineer (I'm one, too.)

He went to the bike shop to get an estimate of doing that, the LBS guy thought he was kidding and told him "A much cheaper way: we can fill your tires with helium..."

No, continental even makes an "attack/force" tyre combination with a wider rear tyre
