I switched to a different commuter bike this winter. The bad part is that it is 27.5 and there are no road studded tyres that I can find (and the studded knobbies are very expensive). The result is that this has been the first winter in years that I have driven on snow and ice days.
In the past, I relied on studded tyres and they worked great for keeping me upright.

- Nokian makes a 650b studded tire, the A10, available at Peter White Cycles in New Hampshire: Peter White Studded Tire Page This is a two row studded tire suitable for flat ice and plowed pavement
- 45NRTH Gravdal : Gravdal This is a four row studded tire that can handle more mixed conditions.
