So I'm saving up for a new mountain bike, and I'm wondering what kind of mountain bike can I get for $1000 or less?

$1000 almost gets you a decent low end mountain bike or a used higher end mountain bike. Speaking hard tails only.

Do you have bikes already? If not, go to your LBS and do some talking/riding with the shop.

Suntour Raidion full air forks are ok. As good as the cheaper full air Srams or Fox forks. Also you might find a decent entry level FS used like a Giant Stance or Specialized Camber for a $1000. They start at about $1600 new.

Not even close. For one the Suntour forks are heavier and instead of using oil inside they use grease. Forks works fine for a while then the grease degrades and it becomes a crap ride.

Yeah well maybe he can upgrade the fork at purchase? Bike has reasonable #'s all around. Love that bikes in this $ range now have 30mm id rims.

2. yes they use grease that will stiffen and reduce small bump compliance and needs maintenance more often, but if you never do any maintenance any fork will begin to lose its small bump compliance.
3. there is information out there to (at first maintenance) clean out the grease, add a couple of foam seals and convert to 15wt oil, which makes them even smoother than when new.
I have ridden a bike with a raidon and it was nicer than my Rockshox 30 Gold which is what Giant was using previously.

You could get a Diamondback hook for a good price. I’m not so sure how good a Diamondback Atroz 1 is but if you’re willing to get a full suspension with not the best suspension in the world it is the same price as a hook.

1. We are talking about a fork that is inexpensive and a value for the price not a great fork. They are 32 mm forks vs the entry level Rockshox 30mm forks which flex much more.

Might as well have just bought the bike with something that says Rockshox or Fox on it. Even the lowest end Rockshox is better than the high end Suntour.

I have a bike with the low end air rockshox, I do not agree it is better than a Suntour Raidon, which is fine for someone that is looking for cheap but decent entry level equipment.

My $1000 bike would be a Trek X-Caliber even though I hate the name or maybe a Scott. I was liking the Cannondale Trail for a while but I think the price went up and/ or just didn't like the colors this year. I feel Specialized Rockhoppers are so common they seem pedestrian. Other brands you are getting more expensive like a felt though i'd be happy with something less expensive like a Jamis which seem good and maybe not cheaper. I already have a Giant Roam hybrid which can handle all the "mountain biking" I really do and not in love with having the cheapest of the name brands though Giant has a comparable hardtail in the price range.

I buy Bikesdirect Motobecanes then modify them whenever. I have had no problems with Motobecane bikes in all cycling disciplines. Yes a high end Trek will be better but if you can wrench a bit you can’t beat the value of Motobecane. All bikes need maintenance and no matter how fancy they are they all break at times. I own Cannondales, Gary Fisher, Specialized and others. So I’m not a Motobecane fanboy ok somewhat

At least around the midwest there are a ton of excellent condition used full suspension mountain bikes available. They're not going to have XX1 drivetrains but some have NX or XT. Look on FB marketplace!
