Will a Pre-2001 9-Speed Campy RD work with Pre-2001 8-Speed Campy Ergo shifter?
Yesterday, the pivot sleeve of my pre-2001 8 Speed Campy RD broke.
I'm looking for a solution to get this fixed. 8 Speed Campy RD are very difficult to find. But there are a few pre-2001 9 Speed Chorus RDs on Ebay.
Will I have any shifting problems if I mate a 9sp Chorus (pre-2001) with my pre-2001 Mirage 8 Speed shifter?

Thanks. It would seem then, that the answer is yes.
If anyone here has had experience doing, this, I'd appreciate hearing about any caveats, gotchas, etc....

Ran a set of '93 Ergo 8s shifters with a 9s Chorus RD. No issues whatsoever.

Thanks Ex Pres - What year was your 9s Chorus RD (BTW, I was able to find a pre-2001 Chorus RD on Ebay).
This article from Branford Bikes has me confused about mixing Pre-2001 8Sp Shifter with Post-2001 9Sp shifter:
https://branfordbike.com/articles/rea...leurs-pg62.htm
But if I believe what I've been reading elsewhere, apparently I can run a post 2001 9sp with my older shifters.

And you can not run post'01 9s with your older shifters unless you modify them. That's what Branford is telling you. The pre/post '01 cable pull is different. (Edit) One uses a 1.4 actuation ratio, the other 1.5

Ok, then I better try my hardest to win this pre-2001 9s Chorus RD on ebay:
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...#ht_500wt_1154
BTW, elsewhere is conflicting information. In this forum thread (see below), someone is saying that they run post 2001 RD with pre-2001 shifters without modification:

Just an update on how this all turned out.
I got a post-2001 9-Speed Mirage RD on E-Bay for around $30. When I hooked it up and tried adjusting it, it would skip a gear when shifting in the smaller cogs. If I got those adjusted so they shifted smoothly, the bigger cogs wouldn't shift smoothly.
I dropped it off at the LBS hoping they could tune it up. I got a call from their mechanic the same evening and they said I needed a 8-speed derailleur since my shifters were 8-speed. I knew this might be an issue, and I read that the JTek Shiftmate Model #1 might solve the problem with different cable pull ratios between older shifters and newer derailleurs. (I contacted Jtek and was told Model #1 might work). So I ordered one in case the LBS couldn't get things to work.
The next day, I got another call from the LBS saying that the problem was my barrel adjusters were broken - (this is a 1996 bike). I was skeptical because I was certain the problem was mixing an old campy shifter with a new campy derailleur. But I had them go ahead and change all the old cables and housing.
Well, lo and behold, that did the trick and now everything shifts smoothly in all gear combinations!!!
So there you have it: Pre-2001 Campy Mirage 8-speed Ergoshifters WORK with Post-2001 Campy Mirage 9-speed rear derailleurs assuming all cables, housings, barrel adjusters are in good working order.
