Are chris king components worth the cash?

Well for my new frame im going to need the classic style headset. Im looking around and i hear a lot about these chris kings, but they sure as hell are not cheap. None of their stuff is at that, just wondering. Do you think they are worth it? THeir components in general

It may just be me, but I think there are many other brands that will last just as long as a king will, a king will fail if it is abused just like a $20 headset and if taken care of well a $20 headset can last as long as a king. Me, I'm happy with my FSA Pig DH Pro.

Even the cheap TOKEN BBs are pretty good.

But Kings are:

1. 100% rebuildable with commercially available bearings (many of the others need their won bearings)
2. very light

I bought a good second hand one, and it's great. But I doubt I would ever front the cash for a new one.

FSA's and cane creeks are rebuildable as well you just need to know how to.

I found Token BB's to be fairly expensive. Their distributor (hyperbolts.com i think) prices the ti versions around 100 dollars. I got the same one for 65 on ebay shipped though, its really light and has not let me down

I thought the cane creeks were rebuildable. I mean the s-2 uses cartridge bearings, theres no reason you cant replace those

If it is threadless and 1_1/8 get an FSA or Cane Creek, they will do just as much of a good job as a king will do.

Thats what i thought. Because i know the guys at my LBS like the s-2, and they just go down to this place called Bearings inc which custom makes bearings and seals. They also stock just about every size O-ring and bearing out there. And its cheap

I think im gonna get a ritchey WCS headset. MSRP seems to be close to the chris king, but i can get it for way less. Plus I am very fond of ritchey products.

They are bling but they are also very eco friendly. They recycle just about everything they use. That makes them worth it to some people.

You'd be able to get a FSA for that.

Well, I think they're worth it. I went through 2 Cane Creek headsets, one WTB, three Tioga's and a Ritchey before I bought a King.

It's been solid ever since and I haven't changed my riding style. In fact, it's gotten more aggressive and more abusive since I've gained some weight.

I have a 98' Litespeed owl hollow HT. I have replaced every part x 3 - except for the headset. Also, a friend of mine races pro DH - his new M3 Intense has the same headset as his 98 Bontrager had during a big air comp he had that year.

I have a 1" threaded that has been on atleast three bikes in over a 15 or more year time span and is still going strong. try that with a 20 or 30 dollar headset. the things are built very well and as long as they don't change the size they will last longer then the bike they are on. atleast the headsets.

I doubt it. one of the higher end ones may but they are 60.00 so about 1/2 the price. I do think the CK stuff is too expensive. but no one can say they are junk. but there are very old Ck headsets that have been on several bikes and they keep on going. plus they have great resale value too.

Agreed here too. My roadbike is sporting a CK headset and I'll come right out now and say that while the quality is there and I have no doubt it will probably still be kicking strong when cockroaches rule the Earth, a headset that's 1/4 the price would probably have worked equally well. I had the cash and felt the need to splurge. As for the headset on my MTB, it's a RaceFace ThermoSP and has served me quite well over the past six years. The seals seem to work pretty well. I would get another.

Ok I agree normal pricing. But I get fsa cheap. The dh pro I got for 40 cdn. Chris King headsets are around 200cdn. I was over exaggerating my point. Sorry.
